LA’s Totally Awesome. Use it in all my equipment to get off dirt and grease. Can get it at Dollar General
Actually works pretty good and it's low cost

OP: Grease covered with dirt prevents rust tho

Raccoons shiit where they sleep.

Dilution isn't the solution to pollution
A cup of petroleum based grease, isn't going to destroy the planet, I mean, that's where it came from in the first place... And I don't see how the 2 rolls of paper towels you blow through is helping anything, still needs to be disposed of, you think the garbage/recycling plant is picking out all those paper fibers so it can recycle the grease?

I'm on well water so any chemicals (cleaners and oils) and wash water I use just end up in my drinking water.

I wipe off grease with an old rag and dispose of as household hazardous waste.

The moment you use water a cleaners to remove grease you take a concentrated pollution problem and turn it in a big diluted contaminated water problem.
I don't disagree but the ground with its natural filtration sediments and its microbes are quite resilient and are a natural filter for even some of the worst chemicals. Water itself is the most used chemical solvent in the world.
My well is 600ft with the water level around 250. The casing I believe goes down to 300ft so any water introduced into the well starts at 300ft.

With that said, no I do not condone continuous contamination of the same area but occasional cleaning with most of today's cleaners isnt an issue.

What if you simply use a citrus based degreaser? That doesn't neutralize the stuff you are cleaning off.

Which leads me to the subject of disposing of used motor oil. I just pour it on the ground cause hey, isnt that where it came from? (Kidding).

Not directly relevant, but I used Simple Green both on my tractor, where I had some oily residue and my garage floor--I used to have Harley Davidsons, which "marked their territory," so I had a number of oily stains. I mixed it about double strength, applied it by way of my pressure washer, let it set for 15 minutes or so, then rinsed. It worked quite well.

I use Gunk and a power washer.

Brake cleaner works quickly and well for most, won't hurt anything & may be something you already have. A little gasoline does the job also & the odor goes away quickly when cleaned off. Certainly the spray degreasers can do the job, but require water & $ to buy something extra.

Maybe remove gunk with Gunk?

Bruce
They used to make better stuff. Brake Cleaner is my go to and I don't over grease my spindles. I change the oil in my X320 JD and save it. I remove the deck and turn it upside down cleaning dirt and rust as much as possible with a putty knife.
I move it to a gravel area and pour the used oil into it, mopping to all areas and leave it overnite.

Most of if not all the above are ok but not so good for the earth.
No, I'm not a eco-nut. Just cautious. If it will dissolve grease that
great, what about the hoses, seals and grease you don't want
dissolved. They are made of petroleum too. For me Simple Green
and a brush works best. Won't harm your seal, hoses, paint, vinyl
seat cover etc and degreases pretty good too. It's biodegradable
and won't hurt the ground water over time. Something us hill folk
who still use a well are acutely aware of. Just my opinion for what
it's worth.
