Spray welding

I am trying to get some more info on this process. What repairs you can do and what you can't. I have a tractor transmission case that was poorly cast and has sand holes in it. It weeps oil. Buying the spray weld kit would be cheaper than replacing the case if it will do a perminant fix and I would have a new toy. Can you get the powders from your local welding supply. It would also be nice to hard face.

I dont know too much about it. We only dabbled about the theory in school. But I have never actually used one.

But it is supposed to be the best way to repair cracks in cylinder heads and engine blocks we were told. (I went to auto trade school).

Just grind out the cracks, and spray weld with the torch to fill back in. The powder is just a cast iron dust. I doubt that it would be good for hardfacing becasue cast iron is soft.

Many years ago, I read about a process the used and oxyacetylene torch and hopper system to direct an iron powder into the flame that was then "sprayed onto a base for buildup of shafts. Could this be what you are talking about. I dont recall the technical name they used for it though.

The one I saw was used for hardfacing and shaft build up. Depending on the powder used I suppose you could spray weld just about any material.

Try this informative link or just google Flame Spray welding . I also found a company called Thermion that does electric arc spraw welding. Looked expensive for the equipment though
