You don't HAVE to use 24D on dandelions. Letting them be or digging them up with a dandelion digger works just fine.

Ralph

5 gallon bucket a day pulled out, and give to the chickens. Multitasking, weeds go away, chickens get fed, plus the young greens are good addition to a salad...the original reason i think they were brought over here, as a food item.

I have a related but slightly off topic question. Is there anything available to really make an area ungrowable (sterile)? Half the time I can't get grass to grow in the yard, but the weeds will always come up thru the gravel on my driveway. Even with the Extended Control RU, I'm doing it at least three times a year. It would be great to find something to drop that to maybe once a year.
Keep applying the roundup, and try to blow the grass away from the driveway when mowing, asphalt, or mow your driveway like I do. JC

I attended/watched a lecture on the university channel that talked about the mechanisms involved with Roundup/glycophase. It made a number of points.
1. The only entrance point into plants is through green leaves and stems. Once it is on the ground, it cannot be absorbed by the roots.
2. The best way to kill a plant is to go after the roots. In the spring the sap is moving upwards towards the growing leaves and roundup is not very effective. It will brown the leaves but leave the roots alone. The best time to use this herbicide is in the summer and fall when the sap is moving downwards toward the roots.
3. Roundup/glycophase uses a surficant that helps the chemical get into the green leaves.

One correction, in high organic soil (heavy mulch) you can kill a Dogwood which has shallow root system. They are easily killed if you spray under them, don't ask me why I know this :(

You can buy soil sterilant. For the life of me I cannot think of the name at this moment. Check at your local ag store. Make sure you ask again and again, how far the application will crawl once it is on the ground. Some will crawl about six feet and some will not crawl at all. Don't ask me how I know this....:D.

Out here farmers use a sterilant on their irrigation ditches. It is short lived and does a good job and does not crawl....but for the life of me I cannot pull up the name. Must be the white hair!!!!

Not sure if it is a sterilant, but Pramitol is advertised to prevent plant growth for up to a year.

Sahara is what I would recommend also. There are plenty of them that are available. Some definately can move though. I killed my ditch bottom and the neighbors ditch bottom off for two years with some stuff I put on my driveway ( the four inches of rain that night did not help at all).

That is what I was trying to recall. Thanks Jim. I would also listen carefully to those that use Sahara. It sounds like it is a sterilant that will last for some time.

I looked up both the Pramitol & the Sahara and both look like they'll do what I'm after. Neither talked about "creeping" if you want to call it that, but Tritonman indicates the Sahara will. Anybody got any information on the Pramitol when it comes to drift beyond the application area?

The herbicide that moved on me was actually metribuzin (Sencor). Very water soluble. The sahara is definately better. To see labels for any of the products, you can go to Crop Data Management Systems, Inc. - Home for copies of the labels and msds sheets.
