Spreader

I have a lot of hills too steep for tractors to spread fertilizer evenly. I also reseed several acres a year as well as food plots and a new yard this spring. I used a atv spreader to sow 10 acres of clover a few years ago with great results. Really nice controls and make up. I think the brand was cycle country. I was thinking about purchasing one this spring and I am trying to decide on which one to get. I looked at a herd spreader that looked impressive, a year or so ago but it was at a dealer which is notorious for their pricing so it was just a causual glance since I wasn't serious at the time. I do however like there larger seeders but I'm not sure of their use with fert. except in their larger fertilizer spreaders.

Does anyone have any imput or experiences with these attachments?

You are going to be talking a single spinner more then likely, the double is a better unit for dispersion coverage. The same as a double spinner is better so is a double slide door. Herd has always built good quality equipment and you would do well to compare to them while shopping... There are numerous makes out there from as many countries.

I have the Herd M-96 PTO and am really happy with it. Have had it now for three years and still going strong. It does really well on fertilizer and grass seed. I am not impressed with it on the chemical type fertilizers like Scott's. I think they are more of a powder and the pattern gets way low. It is a single spinner and does spread heavier on one side. Not a big deal as long as you know which side.

thcri, How does the herd spreader hold up after fert. use? Seems like I just can't get my spreader on the tractor clean enough no matter how hard I try. I usually use soap and water then run a little diesel thru it. I guess I may be creating the first syages of a bomb here. Works alright but just as sure as I clean up someone uses it and leaves it dirty.

I guess what I'm asking is if I clean up as well as I can will I still be able to use it for seed sowing accuratly or will it get eaten up after a while? I sow my cover crop with my regular drill but when it comes to grass seed alittle bit off is a lot when doing several acres. Or am I looking to hard for a do all spreader and should just by a 3pt hitch grass sower?

After using fertilizer I use to spray mine down with just water. My dealer told me he wouldn't even do that. Just get the left over fertilizer out of it by dumping it out. I am not sure that is what I am suppose to do but I do know that water and fertilizer is not a good mix. I expect about ten years out of it and I am sure I will be looking for another. I do keep it in a dry place inside so I know that will make it last longer also. The major parts are cast and the bin is replaceable.

Thanks Murph, I will probably go that route once I get this house finished. My nearest dealer is the one that I try to avoid so I guess I will need to look around a little more.
