i needed 4 sprokets for my stone picker but didnt want to pay the price so i decided to make them myself.

i bought an x,y table for my drillpress and bought the steel for the drill fixtures and sproket blanks and came out ahead on price and delivery.

here is a pic of the first not quite finished sproket for #55 detachable chain.

What is this kind of chain named in America ?
In Europe there are 2 manufacturers: Kohlswa chain
Uitschuifbare stalen profielketting (Kohlswa) | KRAMP. MORE THAN PARTS.
Its forged, and as conveyor chain in many manure spreaders, silage trailers etcetera.

Then there is Ewart, made from pressed steel
Geperste stalen ketting (Ewart) | KRAMP. MORE THAN PARTS.

Because you speak of #55 chain, i assume its a standardised product in the USA ?

I payd about 1 euro per link, when rebuilding my manure spreader.
I also put new sprocket wheels on it, i think they were about 35 Euro each ?
SG578 | Kettingwiel 57- 8T. | KRAMP. MORE THAN PARTS.
The supplier had a spline groove and a locking screw machined into them on my specifications, for so little money that it wouldnt pay to make my own

its a stamped and hardend steel first used in the late 1800's

looks like the kramp

its also used on my manure spreader

the advantage of this type is that it needs no lubricant and stands up better in hostile enviroments such as manure spreaders as it has no precision mating parts like a roller chain has.

The pressed sheet chains from Ewart are hardly used anymore. That means, i've never seen them in real life, or it was in something that was rusting as antiquity in a small city garden.
The Kohlswa forged ones are much tougher, and are still used widely.
