Apparently there are a LOT of complaints about how well the Stanleys maintain temp. It almost seem like they use "Harbor Freight Quality Control", sell it, if the customer complains, replace it.
But I could find few tests I thought valid.
So on 2/10/2018 at 2130 I preheat the new 2L, emptied, poured boiling water in (should have checked the temp). About 10 hours later about 160F. This morning, 0930 2/12/2018, 36 hours later, 124F. Ambient temp 62 degrees F. This one seems like a keeper. I didn't want to keep opening the thermos, thus letting the heat out, to check it more often.

Well I finally rec'd the 2 qt replacement. But if people find out about this I hope they don't try to take advantage of it.

LL Bean just changed their return policy for this very reason. People were buying stuff from a thrift store that was basically junk and return it for a new product or a refund if there is no similar product. So now rather than a no questions asked return policy they moved to 1 year and you need proof of purchase.

Would be a shame if Stanley had to do the same.

I often wonder how some people sleep at night. It seems that some will go out of their way to be dishonest when the honest path was easier. I am so grateful to have been raised better. You are so right, "this is why we can't have nice things."

Agree! I have never returned anything that was not truly defective. Not even Craftsman Tools. Yes, it only takes a few scumbags to ruin it for honest folks.

One trick that someone taught me about using a thermos.
I always 'preheat' by filling with boiling water and let sit a while B4 loading with coffee'.
That seems to get a few more hours of hot coffee time for me.

In 1991 I was in a second hand store and seen one ( it had a handle)for $1 the inside was stained jet black. Knowing I'd paid $74 for the original back in 1974 I purchased it.
Took it home and for anyone who may no be aware of this way of cleaning put in a couple faults teeth cleaning pellets & it came out as shiny as the day it was made.

Thanks for this suggestion. I got a Stanley as a keepsake when a friend died. I could never get the inside clean, but used it anyway. Today I did the denture cleanser trick with boiling water. I had to do it twice, but it eventually came completely clean inside. I have two Stanley and two Thermos vacuum bottles, so can haul a gallon of coffee along to hunting camp.

I also need to try the denture tablet trick. My coffee molds within 3 days if I forget to clean it well. Coffee never seemed to mold in my old Stanley, circa 1960s.
