Starlink

I hate to hear this. Hopefully the outlier, rather than the norm. Keep us posted.
A week later Starlink concluded I needed a new system since they no longer have gen1 router parts. Two weeks later I received a new Gen2 system.

Apparently the gen2 systems have an integrated router now. My old system the dish is still useable with an RJ45 connection to my own router and I don't have to use the provided starlink router. I think I will keep using my gen1 dish until it dies before hooking up the new gen2 system.

Is there any benefits to the gen2? Is it faster? Or is it just going to be a PITA when I swap it over and it dies leaving me with zero internet for 2 weeks...

You can use your own router with a gen2 system by putting the Starlink router in bypass mode. However you need the ethernet adapter and their router still needs to be connected to the system (this is how I run).

Can you run both the Starlink router and a router of your own or does the Starlink router have to be in bypass mode if you want to have another router?

I believe you can run both, but they'd be two separate wireless networks. I vaguely recall both being up and running while I was initally setting things up.

Of course you have potential wireless interference issues running two separate networks

Yes, you can have both routers active, with one caveat.

This is the caveat: you need to have the non-Starlink router running its own network with a network address of something other than 192.168.1.NNN, and for the other router to be using the Starlink router as its WAN link (uplink).

Of course, you can also just put the Starlink into bypass mode. For gen 2 Starlink routers, that means that you would need a Starlink Ethernet adapter.

All the best,

Peter

Yes, you can. I have the ethernet adapter and it goes to my Netgear router.
My switch and hardwired equipment is plugged into the Netgear router and then I have the Starlink wireless as well as the two Netgear wireless networks to choose from.

I have not seen NC improving rural internet speeds. They spent a fortune on landlines in an eastern NC county, for a small number of users. They could have paid for Starlink for decades for what was spent. My county, and I don't think it is different that other counties, has awful Internet speeds. Before Starlink the fastest DSL we could get was 1.5 mega bits per second. Cell service was better but at a much higher cost. I think we were paying $100-120 for a cell service that quit working right when Starlink arrived. Just in time it was.
Must be political.
Northeast Mississippi around Tupelo was that way ~7 years ago.
slow DSL.
Than all of a sudden they started offering fiber from 2 sources - The phone company or the electric company. It started out at $50 for a 100 MBPS Download & Upload Speed (Unlimited Data) from either.
The electric company strung fiber on power poles and I think it's finished doing the entire area. Last I heard the phone company has a while to go. I went with the electric company as soon as they got to me. Price has crept up to $55 for the 100GPS level.

Thanks, to all.

I have the Gen 2 and I have the ethernet adapter. Glad to know I've got options.

Mines in NY also. I go to HD and it’s suggesting a store in Queens.

I’m in Hawaii, but internet reports LA, so I usually get routed to such sites, on HD, Lowes, and others, Hawthorne seems popular.

I may have missed the outage. I have my Mobly as 2nd feed into my Dream Machine, so just a hiccup. Most times I miss the message of switching.
