We still have five international trucks in our fleet with the ps 7.3. They keep chugging. Just serviced the highest mileage one the other week, 455,000 miles. Never had a head off. The rest of the 5 are 6 pallet trucks. That one is an 8!!

In 96 or 97 we had a customer with the interim model that had the ats turbo. Couldnt keep the heads on it. Not very thought out. Just add a turbo and see what happens.

Sounds like an 'add a turbo to a naturally aspirated tractor' thread......:D

I work part time for a Western Star/Freightliner dealership in maintenance and they have a couple 7.3 parts trucks with serious mileage as well.

I've heard that the engines, will proper care will go 3/4 million without dropping the pan.

They also have a new Durajunk but that is another story. They don't make good multi-driver delivery trucks so they found out.

I see they bought 2 new F250's the other day. They both have the blue auxilliary fuel cap for DEF, otherwise known as urea, 32%.

My 97 has a whole 80 thousand on it. I drove it about 500 miles last year. I get it out and drive it to remove the cobwebs...lol

I hate to ask, but are you sure it isn't a PowerStroke? My research indicates that after the end of the '94 model year, the only diesel option was a 7.3 liter PowerStroke.

Got any pictures? I'd love to see some engine photos. I'm not doubting you, I've just never heard of such a creature and would love to see one.

I too would like to see this truck, if it is factory, it is the only one. :confused2:

This is not true, there were many internal changes. The only real problem was that they should have cut the compression down about 3.5 points. But they just hard anodized I believe the std 21.5-1 ratio pistons. Might have been 21-1, should have been 18-1 IMO. That's what I did to mine, made a biiiiiiig difference.

for all the fun details

Ford Power Stroke engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
in case your to lazy to hit the link
The International Harvester IDI (from Indirect Injection) engine is a 4-stroke V-8 Diesel engine used in International trucks and Ford F-Series pickups from 1982 to 1994. The engine had two displacements: 420 cubic inches (6.9 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1983 to 1987, and 444 cubic inches (7.3 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1987 to 1993 (naturally aspirated). The turbo charged version was to be a single year stopgap as production of the new Power Stroke engine was to debut with the 1994 model year. (turbocharged). Production of the 7.3 Turbo IDI engine was extended to mid-year 1994 as the new engine was not ready in time for a full 1994 model year run. The turbo 7.3 was very similar to the previous 6.9l and 7.3l IDI diesel engines. They differed in that the 7.3 IDI Turbo had different wrist pins, piston rings, as well as different flow capacity fuel injectors. Additionally, the fuel injection pump output was slightly increased to compensate for the additional air charge. This engine was replaced in mid 1994 by the Navistar T444E (7.3L) engine. The 6.9 IDI, 7.3 IDI, and 7.3 IDIT engines are not in the Power Stroke family. As of 1994 during the middle of the 1994 year modle production 7.3lt Diesel and 7.3lt Power Stroke Turbo Diesel became on option until the end of the 1994 year model production.

from mid 94 thru mid 2003 there was the 7.3 PSD

In mid 1994, the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel was introduced. Although the previous 7.3L had the same displacement, there weren't any other similarities between the two. The Power Stroke is an electronically controlled, direct injection engine with a 4.11 in (104 mm) bore and 4.18 in (106 mm) stroke creating a displacement of 444 cu in (7.3 L). It has a 17.5:1 compression ratio, and has a dry weight of approximately 920 lbs....

I owned a 92 F250 4x4 ext. cab with a 7.3 idi...
The truck was a 1 owner traded in at the local Ford dealership...
When I bought it she had 22K miles on it...
When I sold it she had 135K miles on it...
The only trouble that truck gave was with the tranny and front end...
I had purchased an extended warranty for 3 years or 36K miles and the tranny went out @ 52K miles...
The dealership replaced it with a factory re-manufactured unit...
The engine did not have a lot of power...
185 HP with 3.55 rear end gearing will do that to you...
The truck pulled my campers ok but you had to run it out of overdrive because of the gearing...
It was a great truck but the independent front suspension kept backing the bolts out of the frame brackets on the right side...
I think that the diesel was too heavy for that front end...
Really the only issue with a very good truck...
I started to put a turbo on it and keep it but decided to get dually instead...
Those old idi's were stone cold reliable...

I didn't know that. I only ever worked on one and that is just what it looked like to me. I was just cutting my teeth too;-). I do know the guy hated that thing and the shop bills.

I hope that your truck pulls better, after all yours has an intercooler and that should get you 15-20% more power.

Sorry :ashamed: Yes, they are the same engine other than change in electronics and the intercooler. Turbo is probably different in some manor. Bolt together engine parts are interchangeable, block, heads, crank, rods etc.
