Carraro 68.4
Hey
I've got a carraro 68.4 tractor and it's been sitting for a long time so i want to see if it will still run but the starter has no solenoid on the top and i don't want to spend a lot on a new one without knowing it's worth it . so i want to try the starter but don't know where to put the negative and positive lead . there's three places to put a wire on on it . Two on the top and one on the side . so i tried putting the negative on the side and positive on one of the top ones and it spun so i put it on the tractor and tried it but it didn't turn at all just got hot . so what are each pole for ? it looks like a perkins 4.236 engine .
Here a modern version of the starter ;Starter For Ford Tractor Diesel 2000 3000 4000 5000; SLU0002 701485503221 | eBay
Thanks
T

The starters I've seen get their ground from the frame of the tractor itself - no ground wire. Have you considered pushing or pulling it to start?

Welcome to TBN!

In the picture of the start solenoid, yellow blade lug is for the momentary start wire. The red + lug (not spade connectors) is where the + from the battery goes. Ground can go on the starter mount bolt or the frame of the tractor acts as the ground connection as @Roadworthy mentioned

Hey . Thanks for replies . i'll try again later with it . so just negative on the body of the tractor and the positive on the copper bit on the photo . What would be the valve adjustement for the tractor? or just common valve adjustement ?
Thanks

Hey
Thanks for your reply . so i've just been adjusting the valves and found out that one of the things that push up the valve rods is stuck in the up position and won't go down . Should i tap with a hammer till it goes down ? what would you guys advise ?
Thanks

Hey
I've taken the injectors out to check that diesel is getting into the engine but when i took the injectors apart to clean the needle is stuck in the nozzle . how would i get it out ?can i heat it up a little ? or something.
also to adjust the injkectors do i need an ajustement kit or can i use the mesurement of the screw that it was originaly ?
Thanks t

You could put the tip in some carburetor cleaner and let it soak. You need a injector pressure tester to set the opening of the injector properly. You could set the screw back to where you found it and hope forvthe best.

hey
Are the bolts that hold the tractor together are they thin threaded like the cylinder head or normal threaded ?

Do you mean are they fine thread or coarse? Not sure.

Metric bolts are available just about any hardware store. Are you in the states?
Take one off and match up

I the tractor shop i got they say they have got any thin threaded bolts. No i live in France . i found some online , might get them . With the starter i took it off the tractor and put negative on the frame of the starter and the positive on the one that you told me too and it spun fine then when i put it o nthe tractor and tried it , it just sparked and didn 't turn . what could be the problem ?
Thanks

What just sparked? Your cables may be too small or corrosion on the battery terminals.
However, you say the tractor has been sitting a long time? Can you turn the engine over with a wrench on the crankshaft or a screwdriver on the flywheel teeth with the starter removed?

Yeah just sparked like the starter was seized . yeah the engine turns over alright so don't what wrong but don't want to damage the battery(it's fairly new ) .

If the starter spun when "bench tested" then it is okay. Did the Bendix (gear on the starter) pushout when you did this? I think the starter motor is fine, but your solenoid (round piece on top of starter) may be bad.

There's no solenoid on it , so i just put pushout the bendix by hand. For some reason the starter won't turn the fly wheel . Should i try using bigger cabbles then .

I don't understand. No solenoid, but you can push the bendix out by hand? Can you post a picture of what you are working with?

Ok . i send a picture later or tomorrow . By the way the starter turns rounds not as fast as normal starters . is that normal ? is there a rebuild kit for a perkins 4.236 starter motor ?
Thanks

It would be cheaper to just buy a starter. The starter turning over slow could be a bad connection on the solenoid or bad windings/brushes on the motor itself.
