Starting a new thread to make this issue more discoverable.

The starter problem is a known issue with certain 18xx units. Something about a slight voltage drop in the original wiring design. PT makes a "kit" to fix the problem. The kit is basically a standard auto parts store solenoid, couple pieces of wire and instructions. Very easy to fix.

If you don't want to call PT, I can take a picture of the installed kit but it may be a day or two before I go over to my property.

Regarding mice, I've learned to leave off the access covers for the front wiring block and engine (have found nests in both) in the winter. That seems to deter them. I'm always fearful they'll crawl up into the air filter and chew it up without my knowledge. So far, no problems there.

Is it different than the solenoid shown here installed near the starter?

Those do wear out. $10 fix at your local auto parts store. They get a little warm in the PT mounting. More importantly, the little wire on the solenoid tends to break inside the ring connector insulator due to the vibration (DAMHIKT). I had to fix it twice (grrr). The second time, I zip tied it to something solid and it has been good for the last five hundred hours.

All the best, Peter
