Starter relay fuse keeps blowing

Since the injection system is a common rail electronic one, I think the opening and closing of the injector and changing the amount or length of the fuel injected and also when it is injected is just an electronic signal.

This brief youtube video will help me make my point more understandable

I am sorry. I think I have confused your Deere with one which is a common rail. I started reading again from your first post and quickly saw my comments were way off base.

I found this link explaining the white smoke and describing the cold start advance system very good. I hope you do too!

Sounds as if cold start switch has shorted out. Unplug switch, install new fuse & attempt to start tractor. If engine starts & runs you've located your problem. These switches have a long/long history of failure. RE503242 Temperature Switch - ADD 49.58 USD

Hey Jim, I think I am going to replace this switch since in the winter, it struggles to start if below 35. When I pull this, it looks like there may be coolant that leaks. Is this the case? Does it sit in coolant. Reason I ask is that I ad surgery on hand and would ask a friend of mine to put it in, but don't want him to have to deal with that mess. Thanks!

Yes, coolant will leak when the sensor is removed. The safest way to change it is to drain the coolant first.

If you be sure engine is cool, the sensor can be removed and quickly swapped with new one and only a small amount of coolant is lost without draining.

Thanks, I thought so. I think I can do it quickly except JD decided to run a metal fuel line that goes to injector pump right in front of it giving me very little wiggle room.

This is bang on, mate! The sensor is just below the upper radiator hose, on the engine. Disconnected it, and the tractor cranked right up. Thank you very much.

Tx Jim -

Add a Virginian with another huge thanks! I am an electrical engineer and mechanic with a full shop, and it frustrates me to no end that my JD 5045E is the only machine I own (and I have many) for which I do not have the factory service manual for my 5045E.

99% of the time I am home free with an electrical schematic - but having none for my tractor, I had no idea where to look for what was blowing the fuse - and would have NEVER thought of a coolant temp switch in a thousand years! Not in the starter relay circuit.

Unplugged the switch, and she started right up, no blown fuse when ignition is turned on. I am very grateful - another thing for me to be thankful to God for on this Thanksgiving.

Now, if someone could help me find the CD on eBay with the Service Manual.......going to search for it now.....

Both you & firetaco are welcome. I find it difficult that JD engineers haven't designed a solution to this sensor that been failing for so many yrs.
