Does it overheat any of the cables?
I would look for bad connections and check the voltage at the starter and battery at the same time.

Connect a volt meter from your battery negative post to a ground point on the starter. While cranking, watch the voltage. It should be low, like one volt or less. If it's high you have a bad ground cable.

Connect a volt meter from your battery positive post to the positive post on the starter. While cranking, watch the voltage. It should be low, like one volt or less. If it's high you have a bad +12V cable.

Check the "ground" wire connection. If the engine is mounted on rubber mounts it should be attached to the engine.

Tractor's engine is hard bolted to transmission, final drives etc - no rubber. The ground cable bolts to the battery tray frame also bolted to the engine. Positive cable goes to the starter. Check wire connections for corrosion.

The starter motor could be heating up and failing open after it starts to run. A complete new starter for a L5450 p/n 17381-63010 can be had for under $100 shipped from these people. (I've bought starters and alternators from them) Good luck. Dick B
