I have a m4900 diesel. When I tried to start it today it started but reved up very fast (like it wanted to run away) and then died. It would not start after that. I checked the fuel filter bowl and it was full. I finally cranked it for about thirty seconds and it finally started. Any one else have this happen?

Is the decompression on this diesel automatic or is it not equipped with the automatic decompression?
Does it have an ether can screwed into the air inlet?
It honestly sounds like you had a lot fuel in the heads and it took off until it settled down with the idle speed.

leonz, it does not have the ether and it did not settle down and idle but died and took about twelve times to start at fifteen seconds per try. I finally held it for thirty seconds and it started.
