The thermostart in my Yanmar YM2310 is bad. The new one I put in failed right away, it heats up but won't flow fuel. And yeah, I have done all the tests, it's just bad. While waiting for the new one to arrive I have been using the tractor anyway but it is of course hard to start when it is 34 degrees out. Is this bad for the tractor aside from maybe working the starter too much?
I pull out the decompression knob, spin the engine, and don't let it go until the motor is spinning pretty fast. It takes maybe 15 to 20 seconds of cranking before the engine will stay running. The engine tries to start while cranking though. First off there is a little puff of white smoke, then it starts to turn black. When the engine finally keeps running it does belch out black smoke for a few seconds but then stops smoking and runs normally. It also clatters for a bit but it's just the usual clatter some diesels make when first started. The clatter just lasts for a second or two.
Thanks,
Eric

It doesn’t hurt the engine. One thing you can do is open the throttle all the way until it gets going steady. The little extra fuel will raise the compression a little to help ignite the fuel.

Can you install a block heater in this engine? If you can, you won't need to depend on the Thermostart.

I always start with wide open throttle because the manual says to do so.
I could use a block heater but I'll just use the new thermostart when it arrives.
Thanks for the replies,
Eric

A propane torch on the intake manifold will help.
Also I've seen the propane flame introduced into the intake manifold by removing the thermostart.

A non functioning, or no thermostat should not affect how your tractor starts in cold weather. Thermostats are there to regulate the temperature on an engine that is already warm and getting too warm.

This is a thermoSTART unit not a thermostat.
This a device that has a electrical and fuel connection, when activated it heats up and opens a thermodisc to allow fuel to drip on the hot element and burn in the intake. Providing heated air to assist in starting the engine.

Oops. My bad. My prescription must be off again.
