My tractor usually starts in the summer without glow plugs. We have several diesel lawn mowers, and they will never start without glow plugs. We had a case tractor, and you never had to glow plug that tractor/lawn mower to start it.

Depends on the tractor. My small Ford 1215 I've had for 17 years will not start without pre-heat even when warm. The NH T4.75 starts below freezing without pre-heat.

First start of the day? yes even in summer. Starts easier and you get a lot less smoke and I think less wear and tear on the parts.

Usually give it five seconds in the summer for the first start. After warm don't need it. Winter 10-20 seconds.

Well - that is a "every tractor is different" , oh and if you have a DPF:

Even though the engine is running and the glow plug indicator is not illuminated in the dash, the glow plugs will cycle anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes after start up. This helps reduce the amount of start-up emissions by 60 percent and also helps reduce build up of soot that would typically be trapped in the regeneration filter (DPF).

Automatically cycled glow plugs = longer times between regeneration.
I took possession of a 2015 Branson yesterday, and every time I have started it - the glow plug indicator illuminates, and it has not been below 50 degrees.
