It seems that as always happening you aren't understanding what I am saying. What had I mentioned in my previous post? I had said "engineering" has been given much credit in the Western world (including USA.) The engineering science today in the western world is based on findings of former Soviet Union mathematicans, physicans, etc. I will give you one small example (as you mentioned the jets.) Do you know how supersonic jets are designed? Why are so fast? Why are so developed? Because... the physics and mathematics of the airplanes/jets are using some mathematical & physics tools introduced by some unknown-to-public scientists. Ask any of your professors in a nearest university there. They will mention a name to you; Kolmogorov. He, lived in 1950s Soviets was a mathematical physican who introduced some mathematical tools which later used much in air flow analysis of the air planes. Probably, you don't know. I will tell. Most important thing in the designs of fast airplanes including the supersonics is the air flow around the plane body. All engineers in the world including the Western world have used his mathematical tools of Kolmogorov who was a really humble man in the history that can be seen rarely. Today's fastest, most powerfull computers are running for what?, you know? guess.. they are running to solve such flow equations governing the planes including supersonic jets. And, almost all these air flow equations being solved by super computers are using Kolmogorov theories. This was only one small example. I can give a lot of such examples average people/public aren't aware of.

Let me add this small info:
The history of main governing air flow equations goes back to 16th century. Since then, the most important contributions to the air flows (hence to the jets) were made by Kolmogorov. He has been the father of all industries which are using fluid flows in their technology.

nomad,

Contributions to science, math, art, literature, etc. etc. have been made by great men and women of all race, creed, and color throughout the ages. There have been some truly remarkable scientists and engineers here in the US as well. There are great Chinese, Japanese, Germans, Russians, all have made contributions. You can pick any country and name great men and women. Nobody in the world is even a year behind anymore, much less the 20 years you talk about. With the advent of global communication most everything is known in a short period of time.

All technology is piggyback on the former founder. You take an idea and go with it. Certain laws may be in place with regard to physics, etc. but how that information is used in the future is usually quite different. Without the Wright brothers then there wouldn't have even been jet technology. It's all relative. What was the life work of someone 20 years ago is merely a footnote in the research of technology and research today.

Cowboydoc, of course so. Contributions to the science, engineering, etc have been made from all race, creed and color. My point in this thread (related to the topic of this thread) was that the western world since early 1920s have given much credit to "engineering" only. Today, engineering is defined by scholars (people of universities) somethings like "optimized technology using the criteria of economy". This means "you engineer should not go further when studying a technology if there is a cost (economy) constraint in front of you". The western world have been working like this in last century. This way of doing science & technology will pray the PROFIT more. Therefore, the engineering is credited much. But the engineering too is a science, but "limited" science due to economy constraints. This wasn't so in former Soviet Union and engineering was relatively poorer there in Soviet Union, but the theoretical sciences supplying info into engineering science were much better. In the Western world, top qualified high school students have gone to engineering schools like your Michigan Inst. of Tech. because there has been much better money in engineering after the graduation. In former Soviets, the best students were going to the schools of basic sciences (maths, phys., etc) You see the education difference.

You forgot to factor in Wall Street and their shortsighted greed. The near term stock price drives these people to move offshore.....lower their costs at nearly any cost. They've been living the dream for years and want much, much more than the standard "american dream". They're looking for a mansion on Malibu beach with a Ferarri or two in the garage.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( You are probably right. But still when you throw twice as many educated people into the world economy it's going to have a positive effect. As bad as I hate to see it you can't use the population factor as a reason for our poor performance in education standards. )</font>

It would depend. If the 1.2 million US graduates were %80 or %90 percent of the college age people (which I doubt), then there wouldn't be whole lot more that the US could do.

I went ahead and looked up some population figures jsut cuz I was interested to see how this broke down. Here is what I found:
<ul type="square">
[*]US has 293 million estimated population in 2004.
[*]China has 1.3 billion people estimated in 2004.
[*]India has 1.06 billion people in 2004.
I got these figures from Encarta.com. Using this data and the numbers of graduates per year supplied in another post here is how it breaks down:
<ul type="square">
[*]Number of US graduates per year as a percentage of popultion is %0.4
[*]Number of Chinese graduates per year as a percentage of population is %0.19
[*]Number of Indian graduates per year as a percentage of population is %0.21
So it looks like the US is actually graduating more of its population than either China or India.

This compressor plant was Matsushita compressor a Japanense firm that owns Panasonic we were making money but our sister companines in Japan were not so it was easier to shut us down and send it to China.
They cant make tools but they are going to let them build compressors(for airconditoners refirgators and such.) it made alot of sense to me.
They could pay about 5 chinese for a month 7 days a week for about 500.00 dollars.
Im getting mad again so I better stop. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
