I work (OR DID) work in a manufacturing enviroment where we build machines which then makes cleans coats or otherwise manulipulates some sort of widget. we have had very little interest in NEW capital equipment expendatures as the local USA market is loosing it;s ability to PRODUCE much of anything, as it stands the only real growing area to get into is FOOD derived buisness as everyone needs to eat even the china population. They are going the way we did back in the early 1900's less and less farming more and more manufacturing. this means that there has to be someone to FEED the billions there. while our work dried up almost 4 years back and steel & fab prices have increased the actual production has decreased here in good ole USofA. back there in 1900/s nearly 50% of US people were involved in farming of some type, now it is something less than a full% i belive (saw this on documentary like 2 weeks back) but as a country USA still feeds a very high percentage of the world population in beef, pork, chicken and grown produce (wheat grains ect) so if you want to survice take the FARM road /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif or open some sort of food manufacturing plant otherwise cost to compete will cost you out of the market place.... though you could go into the Working with DEAD people rout too but then it is hard to sell dead people supplies but you are sure to have everyone as a customer at least once huh!?

Yes Richard the US has really dropped the ball on education and research too. We are going to slide down, the only question is how far.

Well, people, the Western education/research system is mainly "engineering." In the basic sciences (math., physics, chemistry and biology) which supplies knowledge to the engineering, the Western world including the US has always been 20-30 years behind the east, especially in former Soviet Union. This has been very visible especially in the mathematics which interacts with the other basic sciences much. The West can be considered as primitive in the basic sciences comparing to the east, especially to the former Soviet Union. The reason for that the Western world have given the engineering much importance is due the interaction of the science and economy in engineering pot. Governors of Western world have never given enough credit to basical sciences in which researches of next 10-20 years are done because these Western directors have always wanted hot money and ignored the social sides, their own folks. But, everythings has a cost. By the way, another thing about number of educated people is that there are tousands of professors in the US whose origins are China, India, etc etc. Anyway, this science & education post is becoming a politic and I stop here. Someone above said that a US Mfg was sending their toolings to a China Mfg because China Mfg was unable to make the toolings. I don't think so. Tooling costs are usually very high and probably, China Mfg asked for the tooling costs and USA Mfg sent the toolings instead of paying a lot. Sending the toolings probably helped on the both sides. Tool making is one of most hated works in the world.

( I know this will sound political, but the idea that the US (and other countries? ) is allowing the wholesale dissassembly of complete manufacturing facilities, to tool up another country, just boggles my mind. I read a post recently where an air compressor manufacturer was shipping their tooling "over there" because the Chinese "could not make the tools" Are we (USA) nuts?!! I try and remain optimistic... ) of course they would, all this is driven by the greatest of American dreams "PROFIT" short term individual, corprate, massive profits will be made in 2004 tooling china, who cares about 2010, somebody else's problem. I want as much profits as I can have now! for I am living the American dream

Well expressed Hockeyhead. And, that dream I will hesitately name it as Greed has been spreaded all over the world (except our Nomadia /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif ). So, don't worry, you (Americans) aren't alone in your dreams anymore.

Unfortunately, because we want our stuff cheap, and we want it now, we have supported the box stores in pushing out all of the good old Mom and pop stores where quality and service were king.

so if you want to survice take the FARM road

The only problem with that is the fact that few people can AFFORD to buy a farm!

Nomad,
I'm sure the Soviets were the first to go to the moon. Their jets and tanks were so good they lasted a few hours when we walked through them in the desert. The USA has never built a wall to keep their people from leaving. The world uses Microsoft from Russia, LOL.
