Shades of pre 1941. My father was superintendent of wharves for the Port of Houston then. The Japanese were buying every scrap of steel they could and shipping it out and paying very high prices. My father kept saying that we would get it all back and we DID!

( I read a post recently where an air compressor manufacturer was shipping their tooling "over there" because the Chinese "could not make the tools" Are we (USA) nuts?!! I try and remain optimistic...
)
yep we are nuts! once u lose the ability to manufacture your own products, or steel making capabilites you are setting your self up for a problem!

( With the increases in steel and oil prices I think we can expect a sizeable jump in inflation and All prices will jump due to the involvement of oil and steel into the manufacturing and delivery of most items. )

And there u hit the nail right on the head. just the added cost of fuel for delivery will so have a great effect on the price of all items.

One of the problems is that we (USA) have priced ourselves right out of the world market. Our standard of living, our environmental and occupational laws, and our tax structure have driven the cost of labor so high, that companies must find cheaper labor markets in order to compete. When we talk about outsourcing, we talk a good story. But when we buy, we buy at the likes of WallyWorld. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

and I resisted the temptation to mention unions.... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If it would mean that we could have the economy of Clinton's administration and the steel prices that were current then, I'll take the spin. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif John

China will become the only MFG in the world sooner or later.

An interesting fact that was pointed out in the last world health report was education. The US is fourth in the total # of graduates in the world. #1 was China with over 2.5 million bachelors degrees last year. #2 was India with 2.3 million. A distant fourth was the US with only 1.2 million. The disparity was even greater when you compared masters and doctorate degrees. The US ranks near the bottom in educated countries especially in math and science. While our kids are busy playing video games and watching tv, guess which country ranks #1 in hours spent watching tv, the kids in other countries are busy studying and gaining knowledge. Knowledge is power. Education is power. Hard work and knowledge is nearly unstoppable.

Without having looked at any figures wouldn't these numbers be better stated as percentages of the population? I'm thinking that China with however many billions of people, that 2.5 mil would be a small percentage.

You are probably right. But still when you throw twice as many educated people into the world economy it's going to have a positive effect. As bad as I hate to see it you can't use the population factor as a reason for our poor performance in education standards.
