Steering adjustment for a Ford 8N tractor.

soundguy,

Let me be clear, I don't want to do anything that isn't necessary so I won't be converting to 12 v. I agree "if it ain't broke don't fix it". It does make me wonder why that seems to be such a selling point with these tractors...guess it just sounds sexy. Thanks for the info on the steering. I did miss the master spline, I am looking up what you said about the steering in the owners manual and trying to figure it out. Thanks for your help, you are an encyclopedia on Ford tractors.

Owners manual won't help you with the steering.. but the shop service manual will, or the aftermarket manuals like I&T fo-4.

As for 12v? My guess is for the people that can't properly maintain 6v or a generator, they can toss a truck battery in and jump it off with their truck when needed.

Also.. when the engine gets down to like 75 psi comp per jung, instead of rebuilding, they put a 12v bat in to make it spin up faster thus more dynamic compression to get it started.

ps.. there are early and late steering boxes. late have oval covers, 2 bolts plus a backlash adjuster stud. early is round cover, 4 bolts, lots of holes, turn cover to adjusst backlash.
