I have a borrowed 4x4 six cylinder tractor (about 100 HP). I have no idea what the model is or where to find the number. It has an intermittant steering problem. At times you can steer it with two fingers; other times it takes a 40 acre field to turn around. It will steer under powerjust not well when it decides to mess up. I'm trying to drag logs with it and find this problem aggravating and dangerous. The owner bought it used from Smith equipment in Wartrace Tn. They are no longer in business. Any help will be appreciated.

gday
there must be a power steering pump and or resovoir somewhere so check they are full and you have no drive belts slipping, you know just check the obvious stuff.
if it all appears ok it may be a relief valve in the system which would require experience to find or the steering box or cylinder whichever it has...

sometimes there are reliefs, that look like a small 10mm pin poking out of a small block with hoses attached that neutralise the pressure when on a full lock turn, they can stick at times causing poor or no steering.

so good luck
