STEERING WHEEL POSITION

My wheel turns so easily that I just use the flat of my hand.

Weren't these things called suicide knobs when they were used on cars in the "old days" when you steered left handed while your right arm was around your special passenger ;)

Yep...slightly before my time, but I like old movies. I'd see them in a fair number of cars from the 1950's.

I also find that the knob ends up in different positions sometimes, but it is still very useful for steering left handed while operating the joystick for the FEL or when feathering implement height.
The spinner position on my L4350 Kubota moves but stays within about a 90 degree position. My left hand is on it almost constantly and my right hand is on the joystick. Generally I can get the wheels turned from hard side to side before the shuttle shift engages fully. Something I would not be able to do with out it. Handy when you are really working the tractor and not dallying around.

For some reason the spinner on my B7800 seems to stay put, or with in a 10-20 degree arc.

This is one of the first things I do when I get a tractor without one.

Forgot about the FEL. I never did mind the position of the spinner while using the joystick. It's just cutting grass and going straight for long distances has me thinking of where the spinner (suicide knob:)) ends up.
Maybe I'll leave it alone after all.:)

That is the nature of the beast. Any tractor that uses the "hydrostatic" type of power steering suffers from steering wheel "drift". The steering valve depends on a "metal-to-metal" fit which allows some leakage internally. It is considered excessive leakage if you turn the steering wheel to a full left or right turn and keep pressure on the steering wheel. If the wheel continues to turn at a rate of more than 3 revolutions per minute, it is excessive and the steering valve should be replaced.

thats what ive always been told. It drove me crazy at first too but youll get used to it.

Yup, or necker's knobs....

I just spin my wheel with a finger in the spoke. Wish the steering on my Ford truck was this easy....

That reminds me of a funny story. When I was a kid and first got my license I wanted to impress my girl friend. I was driving my mom's De Soto (a big tank of a car) with one hand on the wheel and one arm around my girl friend who was half in my lap. I came to a 90 degree turn with no stop sign and couldn't negotiate the turn fully. About half way through it I panicked and grabbed the wheel with both hands womping my X girl friend's head against the wheel! It wasn't pretty... I could have used a spinner!

That's a good one Rob. I had a good laugh picturing your girfriend as you whacked her head on the steering wheel. I guess your "coolness" factor dropped pretty quick that night.

Things went bad fast after that and the next day in school she had to, OF COURSE, tell everyone what happened!
