Steering wheel spins around and around

On the forklifts there is not any mechanical connection between the steering controls and the steering cylinder. Just a couple of hydraulic lines/hoses run from the steering gear box to the steering cylinder. I don't know how they do it.

Just out of curiosity does the wheel go clockwise if you drive on the wrong side of the road ? MikeD74T

Tested this yesterday, and yes it does go one way on the left side of the road and the other on the right. I am glad I did not mount a spinner knob as I'd be confused. We're not too bright up here you know;);)

Problem solved, install the spinner then drive in the middle of the road!! MikeD74T

There are several different hydraulic steering systems. There is the ram assist, which is a simple valve to apply fluid to a cylinder, like in a car or some tractors. Another one is total hydraulic steering, using a steering valve/motor. On the total hydraulic steering, you can manually turn the wheel past the original position. That is why the steering knob is not in the same position you set it up. On my Power-Trac, which is total hydraulic steering, I can turn the wheel as much as I want. Even with the power off, I can still slowly turn the steering wheel.

Valves are available in two different load circuit options: Non-Load Reaction - Steering cylinder ports are blocked in neutral, locking the axle position when the operator releases the steering wheel. Load Reaction - Steering cylinder ports are tied together in neutral, allowing the axle forces to return the steering wheel to it's original position when the wheel is released (similar to steering in an automobile).

I noticed the same thing this weekend. I was backing up and turned the wheel ccw and nothing happened. The front wheels stayed straight. I turned it slowly cw and the wheels turned normally, the steering acting normally for a while. It happened two more times during the day. I was using the FEL quite a bit and it began after a few hours.

I thought I may have had the front too heavy as it only happened with the loader full. I thought the oil may have got to warm or a relief was unloading.

I have a knob on my Ck30 as I do a lot of turning and twisting when mowing and it doesn't seem to change positions like some you you have described. Maybe I just havent' paid much attention to it. Dang, now I'll notice it and let it drive me nuts!

Wade,

I've experienced the same thing when I have a very heavy load on the front axle and the tractor isn't rolling. The steering relief valve is likely opening. You can imagine that it requires a tremendous force to turn the front wheels when the loader is full and the tractor isn't moving. Are you using adeqate ballast on the rear? This will reduce the loads on your front axle improving your ability to steer and improving the life of your front axle!

Hi Josh
All I have on the back is a rear blade (approx 180 lbs). I keep it there becuase I often use it to move the dirt around while the bucket is in use. I wanted to add some weight to it but I've already got the ends of the blade bending back and weight will just make it worse.

Sounds like an excuse for a new implment or heavier duty rear blade:D

I don't know what size tractor you have but Kioti specifies 600 lbs. for my CK20S. I'm in the market as well.

I think your steering cylinder has a worn piston seal and sometimes fluid just slips past. Usually those seals are pushed harder into sealing contact by the fluid pressure. Try turning the steering wheel very quickly next time and see if it regains control. If so, you will probably be able to adapt and live with it for awhile. ... but it will get slowly worse.:(
