Steering with bakes with HST

I haven't looked at the CC disconnect -- is it just an electrical connector that shuts down the cruise? If so, moving it to the clutch pedal would be great. A beautifully simple and elegant solution to an annoying design feature. Great post!

Turn on the cruise control. Step on one brake pedal, I believe the left one. The tractor stops. Repeat the procedure and step on the right brake -- the tractor turns with the right rear locked.

I figured how to drive with my heel on the forward part of the HST while depressing the Left brake pedal in a muddy spot in the woods where I was trying to avoid some trees in a tight spot. Worked pretty well due to the left brake peddle above, but in-line with the HST pedal. I figured I was just out of luck to try a brake turn to the right!

Thanks for the bit of advice with the CC...

You know I complained about not being to brake steer, I grew up on a farm with old farmalls and hand clutch Case Tractors. Even a John Deere A.

But I also figured out with my TC29D I don't ever need to brake steer, my steering is always right there even in snow and mud.

I have thought about this problem. I think you could put a treadle pedal on the left side and run a rod across the hump there and have a Y shaped piece that would work the treadle on the right side backward or forward. I have really never had to use the brakes for turning. The tractor I have turns pretty sharp as is. It isn't a supersteer though. I put a spinner on my wheel and it really works well for me. It might be a good spring time project.

try pushing a up a pile of sticks or branches with the fel and having little to no down force on the front end. thats when i use my cutting brakes (or try to at least)

I was just thinking about a couple weeks ago when I was dragging around a shed, and the front wheels were turned but were just floating in the air. If I had a way to brake steer, it would have probably made it a lot easier, but to be honest, it never crossed my mind.

Once when stuck, and one wheel was spinning, I wanted to use the individual brake to stop that wheel and get some power to the other, never did figure out how to get my big clodhoppers there to make that happen.

Yup, as long as the front wheels are on the ground and have traction. On my TN sometimes I use the steering brakes when plowing snow. Another reason for shuttle shift.

For you guys trying to steer with your front tires off the ground from the loader I would watch it some. Putting too much side pressure on your loader arms will twist them. Loaders are not designed well for the side pressure on the arms. Just a comment you may have been doing it for a long time with no problems but just kind of watch it.

I have tried pushing brush, trees, rocks, dirt, all with the front wheels off the ground. If it starts to veer off course, I just gently let the front end down and approach it again, not a big deal to me. I would have the best use of brake steering for my jobs in mowing, since my yard is about 10 acres. In the hot weather we have here, getting done faster is better. However, I guess it does not save a whole lot of time even at that. Was thinking more like the time saved with a zero turn mower. It may just be a relative thing as well.

I do a lot of landscaping with our TC35DA and after reading these posts I`m thankful the dealer offered me such a deal to step up to the 35. I had my mind set on a TC30 then. I had no idea the brakes were different and use my brakes to steer every time the work end up a big slick mudhole. From steering the loader around tree trunks to getting away from the side of a building with a box blade, I would be pissed if it couldn`t steer with brakes. I never have my ,or use the cruise with the brake lever up. The more I use this tracktor (370hrs) the more I am satisfied. It has guts and has exceeded any expectations previous to the final decision. Hoping there is a turbo kit available some day in the distant future.
