Sthil Chainsaw prices

I concur that there's not any discounting on Stihl saws.

HOWEVER, I did purchase a Stihl MS 361 this past weekend at my local Ace Hardware using my Ace Rewards card. This gives me a 5% rebate. Every little bit helps.

BTW, the MS 361 is an awesome saw. It joins my Husky 35o. Never can have enough chain saws!!!!!:)

I bought a MS 441 about a month ago to go with my MS260. Needed a bigger saw. The 260 is a great saw but just wasn't big enough for some jobs. 441 with a 20" bar has great balance, lots of power. Dealer also sells Husky and talked me out of them. Parts availability issues, warranty issues etc. No question, a great product.

Is the "C-B Version with Quick Chain Adjuster" worth the extra 30$?

I started looking at the ms290 but may go for the 270 because the 290 has a plastic crankcase and the 270 crankcase is metal.

any one have a stihl with the quick tensioned? do you recommend it?

I wouldn't pay extra for it. None of my saws have it. I have heard reports that the wheel used to adjust the chain can become hard to turn after awhile. A good cleaning will correct it but if you're in the woods and need to adjust or swap chains, you may be out of luck until you can break it down.

I think the choice between the 270 & 290 comes down to the size of wood you'll be dealing with. The 270 can run a 20" bar in a pinch, but the 290 will have a much easier time with it. If you only need a 16-18" bar for anything you get into then to 270 is the choice. The 270 is a better made saw, better anti-vib and is lighter to boot.

I just bought the MS260 last week and man, that is a nice saw. After using one of those Echo disposable saws from Lowes for the past two years I'm in love. The sticker price shocked me but, I'm assuming this will be a saw I have for life.

Why'd you go with the 260? I started looking at the 290, then moved to the 270. I didn't even look at the pro line. Looking at the specs the 290 & the 260 are similar except that the 260 is about a pound lighter.

The two dealers I've visited won't give a thing away for free - no case, no extra chains, no oil. Nothing but the saw and a sales receipt. Maybe I should wait until Jan-Feb and see that changes....

If you treat it right I bet it will be running years from now..My dad bought an 031 in the 70s' that is still running today..

In todays throw-away society I should learn from him and buy quality.. He never made a lot of money, but he bought good quality tools and most are still being used today

I'm glad they keep their prices high as long as the quality is there. I like to buy tools once. I hate when you buy a tool and within a couple of years you can't get replacement parts for it or the part is half the value of another cheapy tool. Drives me crazy!

One thing to keep in mind for Sthil saws, their reputation was built and is still kept up on their pro saws. The homeowner ones I know for a time were subcontracted out and not built by Sthil. I don't know if that is still the case or not. If it was me, I would never buy a chainsaw that is not a pro model.

My decision really came down to impulse and no serious justification. I was also looking at the 270 and 290. The 1lb difference and size was the biggest factor but, also according to the sales man the 260 has slightly better internals than the other models. Sales man could of been pushing the right buttons. After my continued breakdown and repair on my last chainsaw I was very self conscious in regards to the demand for quality. I figured if I'm bucking up that kind of price for a good chainsaw, I might as well go for the best. I think the price from the 290 to MS260 was around $70.

I may end up doing the same. I've been struggling to keep the old chainsaw running. With the 18" bar, the prices off the Stihl web site are:

ms290 ms270 ms260
$359.00 $409.00 $489.00

so the differences in dollars are:
ms290 -> ms270 is $40 extra,
ms290 -> ms260 is $120 extra,
ms270 -> ms260 is $80 extra.

based on what others have said, it may not be a bad idea to pop for the pro model.
