Phil,
I have the same saw as you and have had excellent luck with it. Other than cleaning and or changing the air filter, have done nothing to the saw. The portable sharpener wotks great!

Most dealer pricing is controlled by Stihl, thus the reason you do not see internet deals/sales. I can usually get dealer to give me a different bar and/or a better chain.

The MS250 is a great homeowner model, the MS260 PRO even better, but pricier too.

I currently have and use 009, MS360, MS250, and MS260Pro models. I will be giving my Dad the MS250 as his 028 woodboss is showing some age and he needs a backup just in case.

Hate to be the 'black' sheep here, but my Stihl dealer 'deals' with me. Has on the trimmers, pole saw, and chain saw. There is a 'Stihl' dealer a bit further away, who will stick to the 'retail' price and throw things in, but I only 'look' there. Someday, if my present dealer retires, I may have to go there, but in the meantime I am fortunate to have a good dealer and one who 'knows' how to tune and fix a saw.
I don't see where Stihl forces him to stick to a price.
Stihl however restricts any dealer from selling over the internet.
I don't blame dealers for sticking to their price. Stihl saws sell themselves, IMO. But I think it is up to the customer to get to know the dealer (not just the salesman), and walking in with a pre-conceived notion that one is 'owed' a better deal than paying retail, is not likely to work.

I have a 026 pro that is now 18 years old. it's cut a lot of wood and is still going strong.
Local dealer sells slightly below retail.
Also there are often new Stihl saws on Ebay.

I have a Husqvarna 55 Rancher and a Husqvarna 385XP and I like the balance and the weight on them both. Power to weight is great.

Don't go smaller than the Stihl 250. Check any saw you are looking at to see if it uses oregon type S chain and avoid these. Type S is soft chain. When I got my 025 I got the smallest saw that did not use the type S chain. Type S is also known as 91 chain since this is what is on the side of the drive links.

I bought an MS 290 "FarmBoss" and have been satisfied with it thus far. One thing I learned is when replacing the blade I prefer the "full cut" as opposed to the "low kick back" type blade. It sure cuts alot faster.

I know your looking for a Stihl, and I have posted this link in the past. However, I was really impressed with this place and LOVE my Husqvarna 55Rancher that I got from them. It was much cheaper delivered to my door than the big box store. Something to look at, they Jonesred as well. Just a thought...
