Stihl FS250 trimmer...Wow!

Like anything (tractors, chainsaws, firearms, etc.) it is nice to have the right tool for the job. I bought my 250 three weeks ago, and have not started it yet-my FS 85 is perfect for the bulk of my resdiential trimming. I am building a pole barn now, it is taking up all my spare time. Later this fall, I can't wait to use the 250 on the brush and saplings around my property border.

I bought a 250R this last spring. I already have 3 other Stihl trimmers with the bicycle handles on them and wanted one for tighter areas. I think my older Stihl trimmers are something like FS106 or FS108 models. I also picked up their 600 Magnum backpack blower at the same time. I have a Husqvarna backpack blower that is rated to blow about the same speed, but there's no comparison. With over 4 hp, that Stihl blower is great!

I like their "4-Mix" engines. My understanding is that they don't smoke like a 2 stroke but don't have to have oil in a crankcase since they burn pre-mix gas just like a 2 stroke. I bought a 4 stroke trimmer last year and toasted it in a month because of the different angles I was turning it. If you turn a 4 stroke trimmer at too much of an angle (like for some quick edging) you'll roast it in short order. The Stihl "4-Mix" engines will run just fine at angles.

I bought an FS200 approx 10yrs ago.
I bought it for the wife, yes the wife....She wanted the biggest, baddest trimmer we could get.
Had to drive 55miles one way to find one in stock.
I NEVER did anything to it.....no plug etc.
Just good oil...oh and a filter line for inside the tank, so one $5 part.
It started messing up at the 10 year mark.....
I replaced it with what...An FS250....they are almost identical machines.
She demands the guard be removed and runs .105 line out to about 18/20 inches total width LOL
It's a push mower on a stick......

A Stihl FS250 trimmer and Stihl MS290 Farm Boss chainsaw are on my to-buy list. Figure a $1,000 bucks might do the trick?

Nothing wrong with a Farm Boss, but you might want to check the MS311 before you buy. When I bought, the MS310 was priced less than the MS290. I asked the dealer why and he said the Farm Boss was more popular. People came in asking for it by name. I actually paid less for the MS310.

Went to the Stihl website and don't see a MS310 so I assume the MS311 replaced it? Checked websites of 3 nearest dealers. They all had the MS290 but none had the MS311. Nevertheless thanks for the tip and will keep the MS311 in mind when buying time comes. The MS311 would be a better deal for a lower price since it has more power and is described as "NEW!".

Keep an eye out for the local LCO's (Lawn Care Operators) going out of business.

Years ago I found my FS110 with bike grips for $150.

Best money I ever spent. It'll tackle anything put in front of it.

Maintenance is key with these units.
Fuel Stabilizer in the off season.
Air and Fuel cleaners periodically.
Proper fuel/oil mix.

Mine is pulled from the rafters in the barn and used for 6-8 hours at a time.

Over the 4 years I've owned it, it's never once given me a reason to doubt
my purchase.

Well, there was that one time:

I spilled gas down my back when I didn't close and seat the fuel cap fully.

I didn't wear my shin guards, buried a piece of wood in my leg and
had to postpone a much needed knee surgery.

While traversing the property, I was sure that your trimmer was fully inside the cart or trailer!
The 110 decided to have a jousting match with my tractor's FEL as I drove by.
Note To Self: Trimmer drive shaft and tube housing is composed of aircraft grade
aluminum/graphite and, therefore, not suitable certain sport activities. (Bent shaft and tube to 75 degree)

I whipped a fire ant hill once (Wasn't paying attention).
For the Yankees, these critters bite and leave a formic acid burn on your skin. Which becomes
infected and forms a pustule. Let's keep in mind that
that I have now taught these creatures aerodynamics and they're not
happy about the frequent flier miles. They're ticked off and
have gotten into places on my person that the sun isn't meant to see when you attain my age.
There's a cultural dance that comes to mind of an African Tribal People that begins with
dancing on one leg or another. Then slapping repeatedly various parts of your anatomy.
With my stereo head set in place, I'm quite sure that my neighbors thought I was
performing that dance to music and percussion, at side the road.

I'm just glad they don't tell the wife all the things they see.

:laughing::laughing::laughing: Too dang funny. I know all about those southern ants. I'm a Georgia native chasing a dollar in Indiana. I miss southern lingo and the ability one has to tell a story. Good stuff.

Notice you said you have Stihl fs108 trimmer and replaced it with a 250. I am looking for a gearhead for my 108. If yours is good and you want to get rid of it, I might be interested in the gearhead, or even the whole thing just for the parts, even if the engine is not working.
