I have a MS251 that my wife and kids got for me for Father's Day this year. It also goes by the name "Wood Boss". I've ran my fair share of saws in my life from cutting a splitting 10 cord a year to heat our house growing up so I know a decent saw when I use one. I don't heat with wood these days so I didn't need a "pro" saw to do what I'm doing now. I'm trimming trees around the house and taking down random ones plus clearing some trails on the 80 acres behind my house. For these types of tasks the MS251 is a great saw. Has plenty of power for good sized trees and is really good on gas. Whether or not this saw will last 300 hours or not doesn't concern me as it will take many years to get there. For the price I'll go buy another one in 8-10 years and still be happy. I wouldn't start a logging operation with this saw but it's not designed for that, but it does a dang good job at what it is designed for.

I have a 038 Mag II that was built in Brazil, so Stihl does have/had manufacturing facilities in countries other then USA and Germany.

I know I said I'd take a 250 instead, but I'd actually go a different route personally. I'd find a used stihl 026 or 260, which are pro grade predecessors to the 261. I also have an 026, and that thing will cut circles around a 251. Another option in that size range would be the Husky 346/351/353 family, which are also older models, or the Dolmar 421, which is a little smaller than the 026/351 saws, but is a great little saw that starts super easy and is built more like a pro saw than the 250/251 for about the same price. The Dolmar 5105 is a 50cc, and is a great saw, but a little pricier than the 251. Still a lot cheaper than a 261, though.

I have a 026 that was bought around 1990 when the house was built, that thing is still a champion! I run a 16" bar on it, bar and chains from Forester... Way cheaper than Sthil branded and work just the same. I love this thing so much I sleep with it now and again!
