stihl oil cap

I just got an MS290 with the flip-caps and was concerned (because of posts like these) but after 20+ hours I have had zero issues with them. They require a bit more care when putting them back on. You can't just drop them in and spin them. You have to line it up, it only goes in one way. I appreciate the quarter turn and positive lock design.

This guy puts it best. Over engineered POS. YouTube - Flippy caps part two.

I have had no issues with my saws that have those caps. I just give the loop a tug before i flip it down. Twice, a cap has lifted showing it was not on well.

I think alot of this comes down to the old saying the devil you know. I never had a chainsaw with screw caps so the flippy caps are all I have known and I think they are great.

You don't need to buy an injection molder Iron Horse. Just design the caps, state a quantity desired, post your drawings on mfg.com and you will get numerous quotes on the job. The quotes may be from anywhere in the world and pricing may be all over the place. It is an excellent resource for anyone that wants something made, has a design, but does'nt have the equipment available. Also, all the manufacturers that have did business previously have received ratings from the purchaser - think Ebay feedback. Check it out as it is free for the folks submitting designs for quote - those quoting the jobs do the paying for the service.

Thanks for that , I will look into this for an idea I have .

these caps were invented by the same engineer who designed the famous ventless 5 gallon fuel container. It is ironic that the flippy caps designed to seal a tank leak like sieve and the diesel cans that should pour fuel barely dribble. Somewhere this guy is laughing his a__ off that some company bought his design for a product that was perfected 100 years ago and made him rich. I would like to pour fuel and oil down his leg, and make him fuel his car with one of his gas cans.

I have three Stihls with the 'flippies' Do 10-15 cord a year and have never had one leak that was correctly closed. Dunno where you get the 'leak like a seive'. Never heard of that problem and I have been on Arborist site for a long, long time. Other problems with them? Yes. Leaks? No.

That said. I don't hate them, don't even dislike them but I also see no reason for their existance. A solution to a nonexistant prolem IMO.

Just wait..... I liked the idea at first too. Wait until you dump bar oil down the front of your leg while cutting a tree. Wait until you spend 10 minutes in 95 degree heat trying to get that %#$^@# cap on right.

I have dumped both bar oil and gas down legs with other saws that have the screw on caps. Show me someone who does any real amount of time behind a saw that hasn't done it.

Also dumped gas down leg today with a 'flippy cap' Problem flip down lever not all the way down. Operator error is almost always the cause of oiled/gassed pants legs.
