Stihl Saws, Leak More Bar Oil Than They Use

I've been running Stihls for over 30 years. 041, 310, 361, 441, 192T (two of them) and none of them leaked.

I've an 021, two 660's and an 088, have not had a problem with leaking.
The higher end Stihl saws have a screw adjustment for bar oil rate. I had Stihl shop increase flow a bit, recently.

You want your bar and bar end sprocket a little wet to help keep chain cool and therefore sharp.

My Stihl is an MS 261.
In fact the higher end Stihls have become notorious for just putting out barely enough oil to keep a Stihl chain oiled. On the 660's Stihl had a "U.S.A. only" low volume oiler. Didn't put out enough for Chain Saw Milling (CSM). I replaced both of my oilers on my 660's with high output oilers like those found in the rest of the world. Now my 41" bar runs wet and cool.

Aren't they supposed to leak? I have had 3 of them in the past 30 years and they all leaked. Set them on a few paper towels in the case for a few months and the towels will soak up most of all the oil that leaked.

Loosening the cap to relieve pressure was a good idea from rusty in post #2.

I have the 250 and its a leaker--thought it was the exception. Nice light little saw, but messier than a husky and a little more finicky. I miss the primer bulb and oil control adjustment.

I have a couple of Stihls, both pro models and they do consume a bit more bar oil than others saws I've used, but I look at this as a positive. I'd much rather be adding bar oil and keeping the saw cool than burn one up.

Funny, my Stihl never leaks but I have to watch my old Husky-that has leaked on occasion, never excessively, just enough to make a mess.

I have an MS270 and it doesn't leak any oil at all. I have to say that I haven't did the rev up and look for oil coming off the bar test but the chain doesn't seem to overheat so I guess everything is working as it should. It doesn't use a lot of oil though when cutting.

Have the opposite problem with my Stihls -- they are very stingy on oil, even with the oiler turned up all the way. A leaky saw of any brand is not normal -- I'd troubleshoot it further. Have not had this problem on any of the dozen or so saws I have owned.

No leakage here with my Stihl 'Farm Boss'. It doesn't even 'mark its territory' when not in use and I store it upright.

It is using lubrication oil when operating as I do top it up before & during use. It must be some sort of setting/adjustment for flow rate.

I guess the advantage to being in a wee town is that the local 'Mower Shop' that I bought it at did a proper wet-up when I purchased it. Heck, I've never sharpened the chain myself as they'll do it for A$15 (+ a bit of a service included!).

I buy just Huskys and never had a problem.
