I've always looked at it from the perspective that having 4x4 only allows you to get stuck in a deeper mudhole further away from anything solid than a 2wd will do!! :laughing:

Haul tank full sap w/Farmall H.
Seem the ground didn't freeze over night and ruts were twice as muddy.
Going down hill trike front end sunk in deep,try backing up only to bottom out trailer axle.
Caulk rear tires jack up front borrow from stone wall.
High rear tires spinning can only mean muddy clothes also face.

Helping a neighbor digging out his stock pond. Had the rear wheels sunk almost to the axles. Also was amost at 45 deg side tilt. Wasn't worried about tipping over as the lowest side had a lot of supported by a mud bank. Only had to use the FEL a little bit to push out.

I have used the log chained to wheel method but the last several times I've learned to use the chain on the fel tied to the nearest tree big enough to get me out. I keep a 20 foot chain + a 20 foot strap on the tractor at all times.

I used up all my desire to go one on one against a mud hole of indeterminable size and tenacity a long time ago. But, anyone can get stuck, even with machines that normally would have no problem with mud and in places that you would never suspect.
