Storing 3PH post-hole digger

I had my son help me assemble and attach mine the first time. I knew I'd need to do it alone in the future. Driving down the road one day I saw a guy selling some old iron pipe. He said they had been used for church volley ball nets. I put them to use in the back yard for my adjustable height phd stand.

Trying to manhandle a PHD is worse than trying to pick up a drunk as it is articulated in TOOOOO many places and can BITE you or bust a thumb. I used to really hate hitching up my PHD. Then I analyzed the situation and made it almost easy. I back the tractor up to where I have a rope hanging down from the overhead and attach the rope to support the PHD when I disconnect it from the hitch. With the PHD hanging there on a rope when you come to hitch up it is almost like having the PHD on a multi-axis gimbal. It is not much of a challenge to hitch it up. Compared to laying it on the ground it is 1/100 th of the work. As regards taking the auger on and off, I guess you could but if you hang the fully assembled unit from a rope or chain it is quite easy to attach it with the auger in place. Another benefit is that it doesn't take up much floor space when hung vertically and if you wanted you could use a small block and tackle to suspend it and then you could hoist it up out of the way until needed. I have built dollies out of scrapwood and H-F casters to hold my box blade and brush hog. It is much much easier to hook them up single handed when moving them around manually is easy. Eventually I will have a dolly for each implement except the PHD and can manuver them to get tractor access to whichever one I currently want to hitch up. Pat

One guy rigged something up to hang it from his trusses. Made hookup and unhooking a lot easier. Maybe he will chime in here. I wouldn't leave it sticking out of the ground either, soil can cause metal corrosion pretty fast. I posted a thread on making dollies for implements and I believe he posted a drawing of how he hung his PHD. I will try to link you to it.

That was I. I laid a 1 1/2" dia. 10' steel pipe on top of and perpendicular to the garage trusses so it can roll towards and away from the garage wall. Suspended from the center of the pipe is a chain hoist I got on sale from Harbor Freight for $40. I wrap a heavy nylon strap around the top of the neck on the PHD and put the weight on the hoist. Un-pin the top link and un-pin the main section from the U-Bar. Lift a little more, rotate 90 degrees, push toward the garage wall (the steel pipe rolls). The gearbox had places for two 3/16" machine screws. In those, I put 2 eye bolts. The unit pushes up to the garage wall (log house=log wall) where those 2 eye bolts line up with 2 eye lags. To line up the holes, I lower it a bit so the auger tip rests on a 12" x 12" x4" block with a countersunk hole in center. Now all 4 eye holes are alligned. I slip a long hitch pin through the 4 eyes and instead of a clip pin on the end, I put a padlock. (Keeps kids from being able to make it fall over.) I take the U-Bar off separately and lock it to the wall in a similar fashion.

Hope this helps.

I store mine on the side of a gravel pile. Don't have to move it much to get it hooked up. Danuser is heavy and awkward with a 14" auger.
