With low rate financing (0%) I've decided to go all in and get the backhoe that I'd probably being buying down the road anyway. That said, I am wondering how a JD 375/485 is stored when not attached to the tractor, and by that I'm wondering if its tippy, needs to be chained to the barn walls, amount of room it takes up etc...Safety First

Good move on the backhoe purchase! I think you'll be surprised at the number/kinds of jobs you'll find for it.

I've had 2 hoes now in the past 4 years. Neither are/were tippy if you've followed the owner's manual instructions for removing/storage.

I use old lumber scraps (green treated 4x6 and 4x12) under the bucket and the stabilizer feet to increase the surface area support and to help avoid the possibility that one side might sink a little more than the other (tippy...). Helps to keep the rusting to a minimum, too.

Since the boom and dipper are somewhat extended (and stabilizers) the space requirement is considerable (think... another tractor-size space). I just park it out of the way and double tarp it.

I set my 448 on a steel cart with casters to roll around the shop.
