my dad uses a conduit tube canopee like the ones 3rrl has....

he covers his back patio with it all year. (not winter) he buys cheep blue tarps for the roof and gets about a year + out of a cheep blue tarp.

the material they use on the portable buildings are considerably better.

Here's what we have in the area. This one is $695 installed. It's not really a temp place, but since it's put together with nuts and bolts it should be easy enough to take down. Don't know how easy to put back up if you did decide to move/sale it  .

This one is 8ft high at center. You can add $80 or so and make it 10 ft at center, and a little more for 12ft. And of course you can pay more to have the sides finished all the way, and even the back. You can even add garage doors. Plenty of options, visit the site and take a look.

This is what I'm gonna end up storing my tractor and attachments in. I couldn't buy the lumber for that price, plus I'd have all the time and labor invested even if I could. This will be done in a day.

Carports

I use two of the tarp carports from Costco, one for a hay barn and one for the tractor. Paid about $180 each for em. The hay barn has been up for 5 years in full sun and we finally had to replace the top tarp this spring. Sides and ends are still fine. Replacement top was about $75. The tractor barn has been up for 3+ years. No problem except for a few little tree branch holes. Keeps the sun and rain/snow off. One end is a zippered door, and you do have to fold the ROPS to get it in. Two tips: 1) you absolutely MUST anchor them down well as others have mentioned; 2) Assembly is WAY easier if you start with a LEVEL spot! I used anchor kits from Lowes ($25) consisting of 4 ground augers, one for each corner, plus steel cable and turnbuckles from each anchor looped over the top of the frame for wind resistance. Cheap and effective.

I rent and sell those shipping containers for storage.
All metal lockable 8 by 20 for $2000 cash or 60 per month and 40 by 8 for 3200 or 100 per month with terms.
I occasionally will get a 9 ft tall otherwise right at 8 ft tall. Local only.
The advantage is you can shed off the sides or use varying configurations and theyre lockable.

JRobyn,
Those look identical to the ones I bought at Pep Boys in post #10 above. Looks like that was a real good deal then?

I a tube/tarp thing and it was super cheap. The wind twisted it up and blew it apart in about 3 months. I'm looking at something like curly showed. I'm not wasting my time/money on one of those tube/tarp things again. I would build something out of pvc pipe first.

Same here.. I get a little over a year... I can stretch to 2ys if no wind storms.. but by the end of the 2nd year.. it's like cheesecloth. Still.. keeps the sun and much o fthe rain off.

I've seen pvc ones down here in florida.. even using large thick pipe.. they simply don't do as well as even an economy metal tube unit.

for the 1st week they look great. then they sag, and then the sun eats them alive...

Where cheap will be sufficient... (I'm cheap, but not this cheap!)....

At every large flea market you will likely see blue tarps over conduit frames, and there is usually a dealer there who sells the conduit and fittings. Those fittings might be a start for a DIY tarp shed.

last year I got a 10X20 from SAM's club for about $200 - and it survived a Kansas summer fine - including a couple of "fun" storms. We used it for a tractor shed and also to set up power tools while building the house. That price included side walls with windows, ends, and doors. There was no sign of damage when we took it down in the fall.
In the most recent Harbor Freight flier I got they were advertising a 20X20 canopy without side walls for $150. No idea what their tarp quality is on that, but it's tempting.
