Looks similar to the door on our beehive oven. The hole in the door is missing the gate to regulate the fresh air draw.
Interesting, tell me more? I do agree, what ever it is for, there is a air damper of some sort missing. The lug is still there.
I found the frame in a depressed area, think a sink hole minus the hole, and the door on a hillside several hundred yards away, amongst some soft ball + size rocks.
The tractor found yesterday appears to be a Fordson Model F, built between 1917 and 1928
