What exactly doe's the landpride straw crimper do? Doe's it crush down the straw to make better soil contact?

A straw crimper looks like a single gang disc, without any angle, and uses straight coulters instead of a dished disc blade. It tucks straw into the ground slightly to prevent it from blowing away or washing away. You'll see them used on bigger landscape/seeding jobs.
