Tappa, Tappa, Tappa.
Learned by using a tapping method. As stated before it is very difficult to start a partial rod with a scratch.
Before auto darkening helments you could use the tap to see if you are in the correct starting spot.![]()
About a year ago when welding. I couldn't see where I was welding and burnt through my flimsy ground clamp. I also once welded a c clamp to the metal. It took some grinding to get the clamp off.
I always now try to put the rod really close to the spot I'm welding then close the helmet and weld away. But most times I do that my hand gets unsteady and causes it to start welding. And that's not good for the eyes.
So I try to avoid doing that.
I was also welding once and the glass fell out of my helmet. Long story short. I had burnt eyes for 2 days. I couldn't see at all and had to keep a wet rag over my eyes to keep them cool.
That was not fun. I thought I was blind forever. It was also not fun going to the bathroom.

With 7018 does anyone else use the "wrist flick" method when lifting off the weld to clear the end while it is red hot?
It seems to make restarting that bugger a bit easier. Maybe it is my imagination.
