Spiderlk,

What ever works, I suppose .... but that wouldn't be my first choice of actions! I suppose it did the job and as they say, no harm no foul.

My 2nd choice after the brakes didnt do it. Needed a real shock.

ok so I got the new starter on, it fired up!!!!!! But,,,, the PTO seams to be stuck on? Not really sure what is going on. Also the Flywheel makes some strange noised while the engine is runing. I think it is all the old rust that broke off from being stuck for so long. any ideas about the PTO being stuck remedies?

Had to put on the thinking cap for this. Pure mental here - no direct experience.

Does it have an overrunning clutch mechanism in there for the PTO? If not, you could use a rotary cutter and spin it up to speed, then step on the clutch all the way and turn off the engine. The cutter mass will continue to rotate the engine, but there will be some resistance. I would try and burn off as much rust from the flywheel as possible first. A dozen starts in high gear, etc. That will heat up the whole clutch and that should help get it to loosen up.

Just please be sure the rotary cutter has an operable slip clutch or correct shear bolt. Don't want to damage the transmission !

The other thing is now that the other half of the clutch is free, there might be room for a squirt of penetrant to get to where it can do some good.

yeah strayed some stuff that is supposed to eat rust and not just break it apart. The PTO will spin freely when the engine is not running in both directions I think is a good think? I am going to keep sraying it for a few days and hope that it will free up the flywheel alittle. THe good news it that it started with only the price of a new started and a couple hundred for the tractor!!!! I am still keeping my fingers crossed that I will not have to break it apart.

Do you have the clutch blocked down right now? I think that is needed to help get the spray in where it's needed.

On the spinning, I don't know if that's a good sign or maybe just the way it would be anyway. Have you spun the PTO and been able to see if the clutch is spinning by looking in thru the starter opening? If it is spinning, it is probably good to go.

luck,

Ok I finally got the tractor running to where i can turn the key and it will start on one turn!!! Everything works compression, glow plugs, fuel injector system. I could not believe it, Now for the bad news, the clutch is really really stiff I am not sure if it was rusted bad and there is some still on it. the good point is that it is working somewhat. So my question is how do i make the clutch smoother when shifting? Should I just drive it for a while and hope for the best? Any thoughts. I will be posting some pictures soon.

Sounds like your on the right track! Glad to hear it is running!

Good to hear it's running.

I would do 10-12 top gear starts at high rpm's feathering in the clutch. That will burn off most any contamination. Maybe 2-3 in a row, do some chores and then do some more an hour later.

At this point, use is probably needed the most.

It could be that the linkages are gooy or rusty and sticking. The throw out bearing could be sticking too. Real hard to tell .

I would also try alternately loading the clutch in slip mode in the opposite direction. Akin to the load applied during engine braking - but make sure it slips some. Reversing the slip should aid moving the corrosion debris out from between the plates.

I agree.. get some use on it and see if it free's up. May be lots of rust in there.. especailly ont he input shaft and our pilot / throw out bearing eares..

the only problem there is you can chew up the end of the input shaft on the tranny quick and or screw up the end of the crank the pilot bearing sits in.

neither one is good

then again it could run for years and many hrs to come with no probs....
