Stuck Hydro Filter Will Not come Off!

Yep, that happens, and maybe I've been lucky, but I've yet to encounter a filter that wouldn't come off if you just keep going. If the filter gets partially crushed, those legs on the filter wrench just have a tigher hold.

( The one drawback to the ones I've used is that the 3 legs can swing freely until you start to turn the whole tool with your ratchet, so you almost have to use two hands; one to hold the tool against the filter and the other to turn your ratchet, until it tightens against the filter. And I'm not sure I'm explaining that very well.

No your explaing it perfect Bird. Something that helps when using that style of wrench is a rubber band around the three arms to hold them in.

Junkmans idea for a slipping band style wrench is a good one. I've never tried that.

Thanks, Gordon. That sounds like a simple, logical, solution. Makes me wonder why I didn't sense enough to think of that. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Unless you are changing an oil filter on a Powerstoke Diesel. There is a sticker on the oil pan stating "1-1/2 turns after gasket contacts mating surface". I have to use a wrench to get it that tight. These filters have a beveled o-ring/gasket, so it takes a lot of torque to get them to seal and stay sealed.

For future reference, if the gasket is flat-cut, tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turns after the gasket contacts the sealing surface (not hand tight). If it's bevel-cut, check the manual.

Well I got it off. It takes a spanner wrench on the base. If you just turn the filter body, it comes off the base. Does Kubota have a wrench to do this (in another 300 hours)? I used a punch and hammer to get it to go around. ALSO, I was only able to tighten 1/2 turn after contact, not the full turn asked for in the manual.

I am having the same problem with my 4240. Where did you get the spanner wrench and what size was it?

Thanks
