Stuck in low range

/ Stuck in low range #11
I hauled it to the now closed dealership. He said his mechanic had quit last Friday, so I hauled it back home. Got the part and am in the process of trying to install it myself. Got the broken part out, but I don't think the new one is going to go in without splitting the tractor. Will know for sure after I fiddle around with it a little more tomorrow.

I am confident someone replace this part after doing a little grinding on it and it didn't seem to compromise the integrity of the part. Thinking it was on a 2000. Yanmar Tractor Parts: HI-LO SHIFT LEVER _

Maybe someone can fine and post that thread for you.

I thought so also Winston. Cut up the old one to get it out While still in the Tractor? It's been awhile since that was posted but I believe your correct. They used a Grinder and Shortened the New Lever enough to pass an obstacle. With that being said which I'm pretty sure to be correct. I think looking at it AURAAURA can see what was done. The more I can Recall the only down fall was having to Change the Hyd. Fluid from the Metal Shavings from the old Lever.

I'm kind of late to the conversation, but Winston found the description of what I think is the best solution to this problem. I had trouble getting the high/low shift rod out in my YM240 out after the internal portion broke, because it wouldn't clear some gears. A picture is available, the second one down: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/229002-my-yanmar-220d.html#post2630811 The broken piece (after repair) is inside the red circle. To get mine out, I used a cut-off wheel and trimmed the external portion outside the transmission casting, then pushed it into the housing and pulled it out. You can see what I did to make it workable here: No high range - Page 2

Yanmardoug did something smarter and better. He ground down the top and bottom of the part that protrudes, and didn't chop anything off. This allowed him to push the piece into the transmission housing, then angle it up to clear the gear set, and come right out. It also let him use the original shift lever in its intended fashion. It's a better method than what I did, and as he pointed out, easy to do on even a new piece for a fresh installation.

Thanks for the info, guys. But judging from your pictures the YM3000 is configured a lot different from the 2000. Access is a big problem.
The hi/lo shift lever shaft is not even visible when you remove the shifter and the differential lock cover that's behind the shifter. And there's not enough room to get more than a finger or 2 anywhere near the hole that the new part mounts in. I tried for hours and didn't even get close to getting it installed. I was able to get the old broken part out because the L shaped finger was broken off. That finger on the new part won't allow it to go it--so far. I'm getting ready to split the tractor in a day or two. I'm hoping after I do that I can remove a couple of shifter shafts and then have enough access to see if it's possible to install the new part without removing the transmission drive shaft or whatever that big gear is that's keeping me from getting the new part in. The shop manual says the transmission drive shaft has to be removed to install a new hi/lo lever. Reading the shop manual for removing and reinstalling that thing sounds like a friggin nightmare. If that's the only way to get it in I'll probably put it in high range (now that I can see how to do it) and just do without low range. I'll post what I find out.

Notice the location of the hi/lo shaft mounting hole. It's right in between the two openings in the top of the transmission case. No access. I split the tractor yesterday, took out two shifter rods and access is much better, and the new part will almost go in. It's the JD green thing in the left of the picture. It needs to rotate down to be in right position but can't because of that big gear that's in the way. If the gear could move forward about 1/2 inch it would go in. So close!! My plan now is to try to move the transmission crankshaft (that's what the gear that's in the way is mounted on) forward enough to allow the dogleg on the new piece to drop down. I think I can do that without removing the hydraulic pump. Shop manual says otherwise. I'll see today. Hydraulic pump looks like it would weigh in at about 250 lb. so I want definitely to avoid that if possible.

Hydraulic pump weighs 250#? Surely you are talking about the hydraulic lift assembly? :confused3: I am sure it is but just asking, is that gear slid all the way forward on the splined shaft? I'm rooting for you. :cool2:

WooHoo! Got that sucker in! Yep, I meant the lift, not pump. And I did have to take it out. Used a come-along attached to a beam in my shed to hoist it out. Just got to put everything back together now. Coupla days and I should be done unless I've screwed up something else in the process. One thing I'm worried about, just about every part I've taken off had a thick cardboard looking gasket under it. They all of course tore up when I took the part off. Would you get some gasket making material and try to duplicate the original gaskets or just squirt some gasket making goo in a tube on things and bolt them back on??
