I have been lurking around for a while since before I bought my BX1850. This is a great place to learn about what and how to buy a tractor. I have about 40 hours on the tractor. Most is from snow removal here in Western Ma this winter. I used the FEL. I had no trouble with loaded rear tires.

I started clearing out some drainage swales a few weeks ago and managed to get mired in some rain saturated dirt but was able to wiggle out using the differential lock.

Yesterday was a bit different. The area I was digging in was wet and I managed to get into some clay. I managed to get one of the front wheels to drive over a smooth rock that was covered with clay. The wheel sunk in and no matter what I did, I could get no traction. When I locked the rear I managed to slide sideways and get really stuck.

I managed to raise the front wheels off the ground with the FEL and then put a plank under the offending front wheel and drive out backwards. Of course I was now completely in the drainage ditch. I shifted into high range and got a running start, making sure my seatbelt was tight. We went popping out over the bank when I got to a slight turn in the ditch.

It took about an hour to get the mud off of everything. My 6 year old daughter had a blast the next morning getting the dried clay off of the driveway way were it had popped out of the tread of the turf tires. Her name is Lily and by adjusting the castings she was able to spell out her name.

I used to have a MF 1200 rear wheel drive with turf tires and I kept the chains on all year round, even when cutting the lawn. The chains would keep the turf tires from spinning out and doing damage to the lawn. I am thinking of getting chains all around for the BX1850. I am having trouble with wheel spin on the lawn when trying to get our roots and rocks.

I did go to one of the tire chain websites and they did not have an exact match to the tire size of the BX1850. Has anyone gotten chains for their BX 1850 and what is the exact size you got? Also, I wonder why Kubota put the slightly smaller wheels on the BX1850 versus the BX2350? It is always nice to have a slightly larger tire with better clearance. Also, when you mount the MMM on the BX1850 one of the adjusting bolts interferes with one of the brackets when you slide the mower deck in from the side. If there was a slightly larger wheel like the 2350 this would not be an issue. What I do is drive the rear wheels of the tractor onto a couple of 2X6's and raise the front an inch with the FEL. Comments Welcome!

you should have gotten AGs .
I have AGs on my BX23 and one of my BX1500s.
The other BX1500 has Turfs.
I've torn up my yard more in the past 6 months with the turfs than I've torn up with the AGs in the last 4 years.

I don't know but I'm glad they did as I would not want the BX23 size tires on the BX1500s.

Welcome to TBN :D! I can appreciate western MA mud . Luckily this year my property dried out early. I do not know if having chains on all 4's is good for 4WMFWD unless you stay on dirt. I know of a couple of people who do a lot of woods work who have reversed their front R-1's to assist with going through goo in reverse. R-1's do not load up with mud like R-3's and 4's, but R-1's do not go as well in mud in reverse as they do forward :(. Jay

I have some of those muddy drainage swales on property, and I could see me getting a little too far into a ditch sometime and getting stuck, so it is interesting to read how I might get my tractor out if I ever get stuck like that:eek:
Any other options to getting a tractor unstuck from mudd?

Thanks for all the replies and pictures. I had company coming in a couple of hours for a BBQ and was not in a great frame of mind at the time to take pics. Maybe next time. I have one of the high lift jacks and in the past with the MF I would jack it up and then tip it over to the side to get on firm ground if possible. There is also the come a long. The BX is pretty hefty with FEL and loaded tires and the come a long is not the largest. I was thinking of getting one of the $89 12 Volt winch specials at harbor freight. It can slip over the ball of a trailer hitch, which I have on the back of the BX.

I will probably get chains all around. If I am on pavement I will leave the tractor in two wheel drive. I know that the chains on the MF acted more like aerators and did not cause any lawn damage. I do not have a manicured lawn by any means. As long as it is green is all I care about, whether it is weeds, moss etc., as long as the color is right.

If anyone with a BX 1850 does have chains I would appreciate the size you are using. The websites selling chains do not have the exact listing for the front tire size.
