My bad Soundguy:( , I should learn to read first.Your reference was to my attempt of pulling the concentric snap ring or whatever it is called. I shoud have use that instead of bending the tip of small screw driver. I know could not pull our the seal with the pick. Picks that I have not stout enough and would bend.

I can't help but wonder this, if the nut is hitting the seal before is it tight on the collar that the seal rides on then is it possible that the seal needs to be seated deeper in the housing? It would seem a nut that big and heavy is designed to hold some serious pressure on something versus being a seal protector. In looking at the top pic in your photo set I see a lip down in the housing along the outside edge, I believe that is where the seal should be seated to.

Your right bucmeister. as you said the seal should not hit the rotating nut. I took the nut and pushed the seal a bit recessed using a flat pencil as wooden punch. It moved a Little less than 1/8''.. may be 3/32". Packed the bearing with some grease, put some loctite and put it all together. The manual says that the bearing is pressed in and no further adjustment is necessary.I had the nut tight and turned back just a hair to allow rotation of gear without a lot of flop.

so does that big nut set the preload on the bearing that holds the gear/shaft?

shure give him all the credit for the "big nut sets the prealod on the bearing" ;)

its like putting a pinion together on a third member.... on a thirdmember they take like 8billion lbs of torque to set. (well ok ONLY 180-200 but its as good as 8 billion when your hanging off the end of a 3' cheeter bar)
