You got it, it came about with the proliferation of front wheel drive and the push by tire and insurance companies. The tire companies always want to sell and install 4 identical tires. What do you do if your tires are 25% worn out and a broken bottle goes thru a sidewall, do you throw the other 3 tires out or try to sell them on Craigs's List? And it's state law you run 4 studded tires here in Maine... But this came about with the proliferation on front wheel drive vehicles, no weight on the back axle and they will tend to slide around on you. That got blamed for accidents and the ins co and tire lobbies pushed it. God forbid you get blamed for driv9ing too fast for conditions, which I might be accused of from time to time. A rear wheel 1/2 ton?? Stud them rears and ride....
I have a 97 f150 long bed 2 wd open differential. You guys helped me out with figuring out how to get more traction. I have 300 pounds of weight over my axle now and that helped a lot as I have light duty suspention.
I found out it IS legal to stud your tires here. WHere can I get them done? Will it hurt to run tires on 20 mile trips of pavement? Can I have my current drive tires studded then remove them in march? Next year I plan on buying two snow tires and leaving them studded. we are getting an ice storm this way and people don't know how to drive. Any information on studding my tires would be helpful. I grew up with tire chains on the tractor I figure studs and weight in the back will make quite a difference
. Thank you I have 240 pounds of sand bags and 50 pounds of salt all in the bed of my pickup (sealed not laying in the bed). I also have two rims that fit my truck. One is my spare tire the other is another spare. I would find it easy to get two tires brand new and studded next year. When spring is here I will remount my normal tires on the rearFirst thing to do is find two rims for the rear and mount new studded tires on them.Much simpler year after year to deal with. You'll have greatly improved traction and stopping will be much better also.A few hundred pounds of sand in the bed helps a lot too.
