'Stuff' Growing Next To Your House/Buildings

The only thing growing near my house is some decorative grasses that can't get out of hand. My wife wanted to let vines grow directly up our siding on our brand new home. I don't like to argue with her over aesthetics and landscaping, but that wasn't going to happen. There's enough ants and other bugs trying to trespass already, without helping them.

Here's the one that came to mind for me...

I had giant box woods in front of my house that had to be removed with a mini ex that was there to bury my propane tank. I dug one up after chainsawing it. I used a pickax and a spear. I’m still relatively fit but my gosh, and stuff lol I had to beat the snot out of the stumps to release the dirt and then cut many of them just to lift into my truck for the burn pile lol

Burying a propane tank is the best money I’ve spent in some time!

I have 2 rows of roses now. I cut them back to 18 inches before spring and they still grow up nicely.

I had critter nests before, one had tunneled into the crawl space. Tons of wasps. All history!

My cousin would let his wife plant anything, anywhere. If it was inappropriate or in the wrong place it would die of the blight.
His wife always asked me if I had as much blight as they did, since they lived across the road from me.
I never had the heart to tell her Roundup was her blight.

I just recently was told by an old timer that they would plant hollies under their windows. He said it cut down on break ins.

Similar idea with planting Spanish bayonet under windows down in Florida.

Yeah, you've got to be smart about what you plant where. My wife has plants alongside the house, but they're all ones that stay relatively small as opposed to ones that will turn into trees someday. We also keep any bushes well away from the leachfield. The sun isn't so strong this far north that we need shade on the house itself. Likewise snakes and rodents aren't really a problem here.

If I had known 40 years ago what I know now, I could have saved myself several thousand dollars in tree trimming and tree removal. A six foot Cottonwood growing next to the house eventually turns into an 80 foot giant that threatens to crush your and your neighbor's house. Also, Redbuds don't live very long, Ash trees don't either and grass doesn't grow well under big Maples...and Mulberry trees are MESSY! Squirrels get your Pecans, pears and apples.
