Has anyone used a stump bucket with the CK3510?

I got a Titan stump bucket for my DK45s. It's built like a tank but it is seldom useful, mainly because it's too wide at the front end. That makes it hard to drive it into the dirt. I thought it would be a handy implement but I almost never use it. To dig a stump you need to cut the roots all the way around and it's often hard to get the tractor into the needed positions to do that. I think a ripper would be more useful for stumps.

I wouldn’t recommend one for use on any CUT. The loader arms are spindly and weak compared to a skid steer or CTL, both of which are designed for digging in the earth.

I have a 4 foot stump bucket that I dug out a 15 in mulberry stump. Had to dig around the stump a couple of times to pop enough roots out. The DK45/loaded rear tires would still come off the ground when working with the tip of the bucket. Had to work slow and easy, another 5000# of tractor is what the bucket needed.

My B7800 could handle a stump bucket (the B7800 is indestructible), but wouldn't put one on my NX. If I have to remove stumps I rent an excavator: and I have some HUGE stumps, so it's pretty much a given I need a big, function-correct machine to do the work.

It doesn't take much to screw something up and end up with a huge repair bill: I recently blew out a loader dump cylinder when over-driving the grapple on my NX- cost about $700 to repair; I could rent a nice excavator for several days for that kind of dough!

After digging stumps for a few years with a full size backhoe I can't imagine a stump bucket on a CUT would be of much use. That stump bucket grapple you linked looks like the grapple would interfere with digging.

That said I dug out a pretty ornery Crepe Myrtle with a 3 pt bucket scoop and my old 855 JD. Took several hours but I got that sucker out. Ended up having to wrap a chain around the root ball and jerking it till it cut under the stump. Actually transplanted the tree and it survived.

Still, for just a few you would be better off renting something made for digging.

Thanks for the advice guys. It appears I'd be better off waiting to remove stumps until I dig my pond at which time I'll have a decent sized excavator onsite and can address a few other projects at the same time.

Good plan. That's what I do.

My equipment rental guy sees plenty of rentals in which people don't know what all they're going to do.

I don't think anyone makes a stump bucket that would handle this stump:

Not the biggest stump I've dealt with: this one was too close to the fence and gate to dig up the area to bury it- I usually just pop them out, dig, and then drop them back in and fill over.

Keep in mind a stump bucket on a compact tractor is useful for stumps under about 8" I had a CK 4010 and I designed this bucket and find it very useful, but I kept it shorter than most so I could keep maximum force close to the pivot pins (the further out you go the less effective force you can exert) Mind you I did get this big stump out with it very easy but it was cut a year before I tried it. This one works great,Hope this helps.

The idea of the long stump bucket is that you can "lever" out the stump by pivoting on the far (pointy) end. I think you have the right idea with the pointy front end. My (almost useless) Titan bucket has a wide, flat front (but with teeth) and I can barely penetrate the earth with it.

I’ve used a stump bucket on a 95-2 Kubota CTL and it was a beast. Probably not much short of my 310 for digging stumps. But I think they’d be close to useless on a small tractor with a good chance of damaging the loader.

I just came across your bucket design. It looks like something I would like to build. Can you give me some specifics about your bucket?
Size of plates? Length and thickness, kind of steel used.
Thank you,
Jim

Jim,
Here are the dimensions, the plate is a quick attach 1/4" I think, all the steel is roughly 1/4". It was cut out on a CNC Plasma machine and the sections were welded together, the teeth are pointing backwards to cut roots as you stab and pull back on the root. It really works great however I recently bought a 40hp heavier lift tractor and did bend it a bit, not too bad but I had to add some bracing at about 5 and 7 o'clockif you in front looking back on the tractor.Hope this helps

Your bucket looks good. Thank you for the information. I am going to build one. I have a little different idea.

As I understand it, this is the most popular way to quickly and effortlessly uproot a stump, which removes not only it but also most of the large roots. The excavator digs the underground part of the trunk, including the upper part of the root system, then cuts off the remaining sources in the ground and pulls the stump by picking it up with a bucket. Excavator is also very effective when cleaning the area from a developed surface root system - picking up the root and pulls it out over a reasonably large size. But I'd still instead of going to Tree Service, Stump Removal, Landscaper, Antioch, CA.
