Stump grinder build

Your thread is helping me get re-motivated to work on mine, I have some stumps I need to remove before fall overseeding so hopefully i can get to working on it soon.

Your stump grinder looks real good, I built one about 3 years ago went by a youtube video by Billy Taylor, will try to post a photo of it but it might work. 02.jpg04.JPG

That looks Great! how does it work?
The heat and humidity has discouraged me from working on mine these days. I'm so close I can taste the wood chips and dirt but it will have to wait until the heat breaks.

It works real well, I'm using a Massey Ferguson 1428V compact tractor 28HP, had to plumb remotes in the rear to use it, on pine goes thru like butter oak its ruff on it but it was dri oak, ground up about 3 large oak's and several pines have not used it in a while, good luck on your grinder.

Nice work, that is a 6,000 $ CAD piece of equipment from bauma light. So How much do you have into it??

I’ve got more into it than I’d hoped.
1050$ gear box and PTO shaft with slip clutch
500$ 6 pairs of green teeth. (Pockets teeth and bolts)
200$ steel tubes and flat bar.
250$ laser cut parts including the 19”dia 5/8 thick flywheel
300$ hydraulic cylinders, hoses and fittings.
Wow. I’ve really got to stop looking at American web sites for prices before I start a project.
Those figures are in Canadian pesos

According to those figures you could've bought a DR or save more by renting, but wheres the fun in that, good thing you dont add your time in since you get $50.00/hr.

I would never have bought one at any price, nor would I have rented one.
That said I do have a bunch of stumps and it was a project that let me play with all my toys... tractor, lathe, mill and welder. That alone was nearly worth the price. But I may look a little harder for a project that fits those criteria that’s a little less spendy next time.
Oh and at $50/hour I’d fired my *** long ago for Lilly gagging.

Meleon,
You have a lot more than I have in mine, mine is 2015 US prices, gear box $160 on ebay, spline adaptor for wheel $30 on ebay, 8 pairs of green teeth. (Pockets teeth and bolts) $320 on sale at Baileys, cylinders-drive shift and slip clutch about $300 Agri Supply, flywheel $160 local machine shop, about $100 hoses and fittings, had most of the steel used scrap -for instance the guard is built out of electrical box covers and 2 blower housings liners. Maybe have $1100 to $1200 over a 3 year period.

Sorry to say this but you are only 200$ away from a woodland mills grinder but you learned something along the way and have a sense of pride from having built it with your own two hands. plus your design is more efficient than the woodland mills which is a compromise to save costs.

Building it is half the fun then you get some seat time in the tractor. then you get to fix your mistakes when it breaks or you figure out a better way to build it.
