Stump Grinder Woodland Mills WG24?

Good information, didn't think my little BX would handle that and it is good news. A lot of places our MX would be too large to use but the BX will be perfect. May even end up doing a few small commercial jobs down the road and it would be perfect for the BX - small stumps, tight access and wouldn't need to rent.....
Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but this popped to the top of a Google Search and since I already had an account here... figured I'd ask another question.

I've read this entire thread and surprisingly found almost no mention of how rocky soil affects this thing. I'm considering this for clearing stumps from an area I'm clearing eastern white pine from to feed my Woodmizer. I'll want to get the stumps down to just below grade so the area can be seeded and bush hogged and won't really be in a hurry since the 1.5-2 acre area is being harvested over time as I need lumber. No real cultivation afterwards, just throw and grow food plot kind of stuff.

Our soil here in the Hudson Valley/Catskills Mountains of NY is basically rocks with smaller rocks in between them so I'm curious to know what the ramifications of that would be with this or if the $2500 should just go towards excavator time when I'm finished. This area is surrounded by stone walls so it was cleared for pasture at some point so it isn't as bad as virgin soil but we grow rocks here so I'm sure there are plenty lurking.

The reason I like this idea of a grinder though is that you don't have to deal the removal/burying/burning/etc. of a couple hundred stumps which would be required if they were removed with an excavator.

I worried about rocks, as well. I've not had any issue but don't think we have many rocks here.

A friend in Northern Va. worried about rocks as he said "That's all we got here". Finally, he decided to order the grinder and extra teeth. To date he has ground a lot of stumps but not damaged any teeth.

I think the worry may be lots worse than the actual issue.

Perhaps someone with more experience in a rocky area will chime in.

For me, the stump grinder paid for itself the first couple of days. Now it sits idle most of the time but is ready whenever I need it. I consider it a great purchase.

Thanks for the quick response! I've been looking at this grinder for about 18 months or so since I came across it when saw mill shopping. This was a great thread and answered a lot of my questions and this is probably on my radar in the next year or so when I have time to actually get to the stumps. Trying to get all my ash dropped and milled now before they rot away :(

Yea, I've got a few implements that get used less and less over time as well but I suppose that is only because they are doing their job well and you quit playing catch up at some point - supposedly :confused3:

I have this grinder. Rocks are brutal on any stump grinder, and I've hit quite a few. I've ground quite a few stumps but most of my teeth are beat up and need to be sharpened or replaced. A bunch are shattered. I've been grinding with dull teeth for awhile and decided it's time to change them. Sharp teeth make the job so much quicker.
Ebay sellers have these cheaper than Woodland mills. It looks like Shaver, Ashland style teeth will fit this grinder, but I don't want to order a bunch and find out they don't fit. Does anyone know if they are the same tooth? Another option is to have the carbide retipped. Does anyone know a place that does this and what the cost is?
I think this grinder is a good value for the homeowner.

I bought the WG24 a few months ago and have ground around 60 to 70 stumps now. I'm really impressed by the ease of use and how quickly it will grind. I've ground oak, cherry and elm with a few hickory mixed in. The grinder makes quick work of anything under 10". The larger stumps take some time but I can grind a 24" stump of white oak in less than 30min

This stump has really put the grinder to the test. I've got more than 2 hours on it so far. I found that a leaf blower is great at clearing off the debris so I can see what is going on
