Several threads discussing rotary cutters have referred to a stump jumper. Being from the county I've heard of stump broke(not from experience), but I'm not familiar with a stump jumper. The name implies it assists the cutter over a stump. Could somebody tell me what it is and how do tell if a cutter is so equipped, please?

The blades on the cutter attach to a round or oblong 'pan' under the shredder. When it encounters a stump the blades swing out of the way and the 'pan' rides over the stump. Without a stump jumper the blades just attach to the shaft coming out of the bottom of the gearbox and the risk of a bent shaft is more likely.

It's just a round disc of sort that the slapper blades are attached to that is rounded up on the outer edges. That way, if it hits a stump, it makes the cutter jump up and bounce over it rather than stick into it. It's a very simple idea and most all should have them.

Ahhh thanks guys, now that you explain it, I recall seeing it under there.

Like the others have said, the pan rides over stumps... It also is where the cutter gets it's momentum from. The bigger/heavier stump jumper, the heavier stuff the cutter will go through without slowing. Some of the heavier cutters have 200lb.+ jumpers...
