Stump pulling

   / Stump pulling #11
My dad and I have pulled several trees down and out of rivers and creeks. One thing he always stresses is to tie off the chain to the FRONT of the tractor and then using reverse. This keeps the front tires down.

Does anyone know if this is an OK method? Will this do any damage to the tractor?

actually pulling in revers is not good on the gears, especially the front end ones if in 4 wheel drive.

the helical cut gears are designed to PULL the best not REVERS as they will/can creep up & onto the tops of the teeth causing them to shear or bend shafts ect. while reversing under load is dooable pulling deliberatly in revers is a no no.

I agree with your Dad's safety concerns if you guys were using a Rear Wheel drive tractor. However if it's a 4 wheel drive tractor pulling from reverse can cause the Rear end to lift up.
I've grabbed loose brush with my grapple and slowly backed away only to find the Brush wasn't as loose as I thought! The front end got traction and the back end lifted right up.

I just did the exact same thing except I had an 800 pound woodchipper hanging way out on the back and the tractor still tipped forward.

Try lowering the FEL everytime you back up, it does wonders. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
