After two days trying to remove a large (30-35") stump with a Kubota 7610,fel, shovel, and axe, I finally came to my senses and will farm out the job. I have about 25 other stumps to remove. My question is does anyone have an idea what the cost will be to hire someone with a bulldozer? to remove the 25 or so stumps? This is in the Saratoga Springs area of New York.

A dozer is the last thing I'd bring in for stump removal. An excavator or trackhoe would be my first choice, especiall with big stumps and plenty of them. If the price for one of them is too much, get a backhoe in there.

I'd want a trackhoe of at least 100 hp and prefer something closer to 150 hp or more to get it done quickly.

A dozer will spend too much time moving more dirt than you need to move, and unless its a big dozer, it might not even be able to move very much dirt when it gets through the top soil. Depending on your conditions, what's under the topsoil could be extremely hard and very difficult to cut with the blade of a dozer. My dozer weighs over 40,000 pounds and has 168 hp and I park it before wasting time and energy on stumps.

I have a Ford 555E backhoe that I use on stumps and big trees. It's ten times faster and easier to use, than my dozer for takeing them out. Especially the big pines and oaks.

Good luck,
Eddie

I can not speak directly on your area, but here in Pennsylvania, I had 28 stumps removed from my property all in a heavy clay soil. I shoped around and got prices by the hour from 25 - 100 dollars.. I went with the 25 dollar per hour person and he was done in 4.5 hours.. He used a large JD backhoe and for the money he also knocked the clay-dirt off the bottom and relocated the stumps for me.

Shop around. Most construction companies should be able to give you a quick estimate.

Not sure WHERE the stumps are at and if they NEED to be REMOVED or just ground up.. you can have them ground up for pretty cheap, depending on how far the grinder guy has to go and if he is in the area and if there is enough work ect... Just thought I'd suggest that as many people may not know that you can grind a stump into the dirt and do very little damage to surrounding area.

$25 per hour for a big machine and an operator is dirt cheap. You were fortunate to find someone who, to me, didn't know what his time was worth or what his machine was costing him.

Glad you had it done that cheap, but I wouldn't run my CUT with a rotary cutter for less than $40 per hour, especially when I have to haul it to the site. But again, glad it worked for you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was gonna say same thing , but didn't want to be antagonistic.

Now I'll say it. THAT'S FREAKIN CHEAP! I've got 12ac of work for him tomorrow. You can't get bush hogging done for 25/hr 'round here.

There was another post where TBNer gave 800 for 3hrs of trackhoe work, where I gave 85/hr for same CAT225
Goes to show the wide range of price and the need to shop around.

My neighbor recently had about 13 stumps removed for about $500. It took about seven hours. They were using some type of large back hoe. This is in Dutchess County, NY.

He originally tried to use my BX-23. It probably would have taken him a year to get them all out.

Well I'm the guy who was mentioned above that paid too much. I was quoted for the whole job rather than per hour. Maybe you should get a quote of hourly rates at the same time they quote the job. Apparently I paid too much, but well, my other quote was $50 less and it required me to do significantly more work. Next time I'll just go buy a stump grinder for $4000 and use it, and then resell it for $4000.

You are so correct with that statement. That is why I stress shopping around. I first attempted to remove them myself with an Allmand TLB. But this was truely a waste of time and money.

Again shop around get prices..

Also as stated in other posts, depending on what you want to do, you can rent a stump grinder or have someone come in a grind them.. There was a lad in my area that was grinding stumps for 10-25 dollars per stump depending on size and if he needed to cut the stump down with a chain saw. I watched him do some work on my neighbers property and he made it look easy.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
