I have a bunch of stumps close to 100 that I have pulled out! I have a very deep lake thinking about putting about 20 of them in there for fish habitat! What do you guys think bad or good idea? It about 30 feet deep?

Maybe, but depending on the wood they could be difficult to secure/sink in a location- once they're in the lake they'll be in there for good, may prove a hazard & next to impossible to remove - IMO I'd rather burn them

They are mostly maple root wads! I not a very good fire builder! They never seem to burn in my brush piles!?

I wouldn't. It would take a long time for them to rot, and it might not be legal.

Just recently the PA fish commission drained a lake in their conrol which was man made and was formed to cut ice in the late 1800's thru about 1949. It is amazing how well preserved all the stumps are. They obviously made excellent habitat for the fish. If you have a way to get them into the deeper water I say go for it!

I don't think they would pose any problem and wood placed in water virtually does not rot. Pilings for bridges and buildings placed in wet soil conditions are wood because they will outlast steel. Where the rot is right on the water/air interface. You may have to chain or cable them down to prevent them from floating.

Good idea. If it freezes sufficiently where you are, drag them out on the ice in the proper spot and wait for spring.

All of our house flooring is made from sunken logs from the river runs of the 1800's which was reclaimed, milled, sold. Any stumps you drop in now will be there for a lot longer than any of us on this board!! I say go for it in moderation depending on the surface area of your lake.

An 800 acre lake in a state park near me did this very thing several years back when they partially drained the lake for fish control. They located each brush pile and stump with their GPS and published the locations for the public's use.

The used to sink Christmas trees around here in the area lakes for fish habitat.

Excellent for fish if you stock your lake. The assumption is the lake is 100% on your property? If that is the case, you're good to do whatever you want. I would trim off any really long roots though in the event you have motorized boat on the lake.

I say go for it!1 All your doing is what civilians and local ,state and federal entities do all the time, creating a "reef". From old tires and boats, to old oil rigs. I say make a couple of piles if you can so the fish have a "point A and B" to travel to. 30' is pretty deep, but if your concerned about boating, attach a buoy to each pile.

You really should check with local authorities, university's, state govt., federal govt., and the U.N.

Form a commission, get it funded, schedule hearings, hire contractors to study the impacts on all species and the taste of the water.

Or what the heck, throw 'em in the lake !

Thanks sounds like I'm going for it! I really like the idea of dragging them out on the ice and waiting till spring! Usually it freezes really good but who knows about this year it 57 degrees out today and usually its in the lower 30s! And the lake is 100 percent mine and I just use john boats with trolling motor to fish it so I shouldn't have to worry to much about hitting them! I plan on pressure washing them of before I sink them too! To keep as much dirt as possible!

I'd rope the roots together before you drag them onto the ice so they stay in a clump and not float all over. Maybe thread the rope thru some blocks to weigh them down. Toss one or two in the lake now and see what happens - if they float weign them down.

Why wash them off - that will just make them lighter? 200 stumps is a lot tho - a big pile for sure - maybe make several piles?

Man! There has just got to be a way to use explosives and catapults for this project.

Great idea to put the stumps in the lake.

I just wanted to save the dirt, but you are rite it , it would help them to sink! I don't plan on putting them all in the lake just about 50! I like the catapult idea too!:)

Sounds like a great idea, but I would check with your state fish and game and get their feeling about doing this. Here we have a major problem with stumps and regulations on burning them has tightened up, digging holes for disposal is a no no in our town, and hauling them off is not cheap either. The few I had disappeared and the cover soil was seeded with clover and it is growing nicely. W
